Our vision is for regular music to be integral to dementia care, with an in-house musician in every care home.
OUR MISSON
To provide high quality music on a regular basis to improve residents’ well-being, to help care staff deliver and to provide a renewed sense of purpose and employment for musicians.
Shine provides high quality, stimulating music interventions in both individual and group session that create meaningful connections and improve resident well-being.
High quality music interventions improves staff morale, enhances communication skills of care staff, transforms the bond between carer and resident and unlocks understanding of residents lives.
For musicians, music interventions with residents provides meaningful and regular employment, rekindles their sense of purpose and feeling worthwhile in society and enhances their skills
Shine’s works benefits residents living in care homes, those who care for them and professional musicians.
A key measurable effect for residents is improved well-being as shown by greater physical activity, a greater willingness to eat and co-operation in daily tasks. appreciation and engagement with the environment and other people, reduced medication and increased visible contentment.
In addition, for care homes, the key measurable effect is improved quality of care as demonstrated by CQC ratings, improved staff morale, family feedback and the delivery of efficient care.
Finally, for musicians, the key measurable effect is an increased number of musicians being employed in this kind of work.
Shine’s long term goal is for music to be integral to dementia care with an in-house musician in 10 care homes per year over 5 years.
The wider benefits of Shine’s work are to support a dementia friendly society and to undertake collaborative research to increase the understanding of the value of music in dementia care.
Shine supports families and the wider public by showing that the on-going and regular provision of music in care generates a sense of optimism and hope that there can be quality of life for those living with a dementia.
