About us
Who we are
RIFT Social Enterprise was established in 2018 as a Community Interest Company with charitable objectives. Our mission is to support the most marginalised in society with specialist and long-lasting self-employment and tax advice, guidance and advocacy.
RIFT Social Enterprise offers three primary services:
- Tailored advice to people who are interested in becoming self-employed, focusing on the practicalities of being self-employed (eg HMRC registration, tax thresholds, insurance etc). This is supported by an in-cell work book and ongoing contact pre-release. We then provide 12 months unlimited support from a team of Accountants and Business Start-Up Specialists during their first year of trading and complete their first Self-Assessment tax return for them as part of the service
- Tax refunds for eligible prisoners when they first enter prison. Our model sees us train a prisoner who then assesses all new prison receptions for eligibility for a tax refund and who then supports them with completing a claim pack which is sent to us for processing
- Support for prisoners who have HMRC-related issues (eg penalty accrual), usually as a result of submitting their Self-Assessment tax returns late or not at all. We gather relevant information and appeal penalties on the client’s behalf directly with HMRC
