About us
Who we are
REAL carries out a range of certification and consumer protection activities all of which promote sustainable energy. REAL's activities fall under two headings: consumer codes and certification schemes.
REAL has a small and dynamic team that works hard to promote and enforce its consumer codes and certification schemes in a robust and even-handed way. With backgrounds in law, economics, trading standards, dispute resolution, customer service, renewable technologies and environmental management, the team has a wealth of knowledge and experience available to consumers and companies alike. What makes the team special is that we truly believe in what we do.
Consumer Codes
REAL administers the Renewable Energy Consumer Code (RECC) which sets out high consumer protection standards for businesses selling and installing small-scale renewable energy generators for domestic consumers. RECC is the largest Chartered Trading Standards Institute approved consumer code within the industry. RECC covers a range of technologies including solar for electricity and hot water, biomass boilers, ground and air source heat pumps, and batteries for energy storage.
Certification Schemes
REAL has been working with a range of partners since 2010 to deliver certification schemes for green gas, bio fertiliser, compost, and compostable packaging. REAL ensures that a range of sector participants are complying with the relevant standards, whether EU, UK or GB-wide, relevant to the products and services they produce.
REAL is a subsidiary of the Renewable Energy Association (REA) which is the largest renewable energy trade association in the UK.
REAL Offices
The REAL/ REA offices are based in the iconic Shell Mex House with direct access from both the Strand and Victoria Embankment Gardens. It is within walking distance of South Bank and the Covent Garden area, and has great underground and National rail transport links.
