About us
Who we are
The Pastoral and Environmental Network in the Horn of Africa (PENHA) is an African-led organization established in 1989 by a group of research and development workers from the Horn of Africa. PENHA has been involved in action-oriented research related to pastoral and agro-pastoral development throughout the Horn of Africa and has an established track record in the field of pastoral research, project implementation, gender studies and policy advocacy among pastoral peoples throughout the Horn region (including Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda) and through its Development Education and Youth Programme in the UK. PENHA values Indigenous Knowledge and Practices; and Afro-centric perspectives on African contemporary development issues. It promotes systemic and multi-disciplinary approaches, looking at both national and regional development issues with a view of promoting approaches to policy and programme design and implementation that emphasize outcomes.
