About us
Who we are
Overview
Parkinson’s Africa was established to support and empower Africans impacted by Parkinson’s disease (PD). As the first, and only, pan-African Parkinson’s support charity, we believe we have a unique opportunity, and responsibility, to significantly impact the lives and experiences of those affected by PD across the continent. Ultimately, we seek to transform the PD landscape across Africa through programs and initiatives that bring about a paradigm shift in the way the disease is perceived and managed across Africa.
Our Vision
An empowered African Parkinson’s disease patient community.
By empowered, we mean:
- Patients that have control over the management of their condition in daily life;
- Patients with the capacity to participate in decisions related to their condition to the extent that they wish to do so;
- Patients that are “co-managers” of their condition in partnership with health professionals; and
- Patients that have developed the self-confidence, self-esteem and coping skills to manage the impacts of their illness on everyday living.
Our Mission
To transform the Parkinson’s disease landscape across Africa, community by community, into societies where those affected have equitable access to quality healthcare, research, support, information and educational resources.
Our People
We are governed by a dedicated and dynamic Board of Trustees with a diversified set of skills and experiences. We currently have one paid full-time staff member who works as our operations coordinator in Nigeria.
