About us
Who we are
Established in 1973, New Internationalist publishes a multi-award winning magazine, a range of books, and is founder of the Ethical Shop. The company is run by a collaborative, friendly and forward-thinking team. Operated as a workers co-op with a flat management structure, we live our values, confronting inequality and promoting freedom of expression. Established as a not-for-profit equal-pay co-operative and based in Oxford (UK), our independence has been our blessing for over 40 years, enabling our journalism to respond to the world as it is, not as a proprietor thinks it is or should be. It’s important to us that our analysis provides the facts in context; brings the experiences of those communities affected to light; and demands bright, bold ideas of ways to change things for the better.
Vision
At New Internationalist we believe that equality improves life in every way, and that when people come together to confront injustice – be it social, environmental or economic – wonderful things can happen. New Internationalist is part of a global movement, forging ties and framing the arguments for genuine change.
Mission
An independent, not-for-profit media co-operative, New Internationalist is a voice that empowers. We tell the stories that the mainstream media sidestep and offer a platform for the people living those stories. Our award-winning magazine, books and website set the agenda for a radically fairer future, promote global justice and campaign for the disadvantaged all over the world.
Values
Equality. Equality has always been at the heart of things for New Internationalist. Be it related to class, income, race, gender or disability, inequality maintains and deepens division, poverty and oppression. Meanwhile, the overwhelming evidence is that an increase in equality improves life for everyone.
Environment. Climate change and environmental limits to growth are often put on the backburner when other dramatic events occur. We see the health of the planet as being of fundamental importance and aim to communicate progressive green thinking and action.
Economy. As the gap between rich and poor continues to widen both within and between countries, we seek to reveal the workings of the current global economic system, while communicating ideas for a more just and sustainable economy.
Global justice. New Internationalist emerged in the 1970s as part of a movement aimed at delivering the basic needs and development of people in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Our vision of global justice still prioritizes a fairer distribution of power and resources between nations and continents – and sees the fulfilment of people’s basic needs the world over as the first prerequisite of a sustainable future.
Rights and diversity. New Internationalist champions universal human rights and we believe that diversity – in cultural, sexual and other terms – enriches social experience.
Representation. Who gets to speak remains a key element in the struggle for justice and equality. This has a bearing not only on who we interview and whose stories we tell, but also who we commission.
Political vision into practice. We have a sustainable ‘worldview’ based neither on profit-driven capitalism nor on eco-blind socialism. We put egalitarian values and horizontal forms of organizing into practice with our not-for-profit co-operative structure.
