About us
Who we are
Music Masters’ mission is to bring about a world where every single child has the opportunity to
experience the extraordinary power of music in their lives, no matter their background. Our work is
designed to achieve long-lasting, systemic change within the national music and education sectors.
Our focus is on addressing the serious, significant, and entrenched lack of high-quality music education provision for children in the UK. The issue isn’t just around quality and consistency; in many cases music provision is non-existent, yet, this is provision that could transform countless lives and communities and play a hugely supportive role in the UK’s post-Covid recovery.
Our work begins with state primary schools, because working at a school level is the clearest way to
reach children of all backgrounds. Through our strong school partnerships and highly trained teaching
team we learn and model what high quality, inclusive and inspiring music education can look like. Our schools provide a rich practical learning environment for the diverse cohorts of change-making teaching musicians we train each year through Musicians of Change, our PGCEi course with Birmingham City University, because we know how crucial good teaching is for children’s continued engagement with learning music. Our commitment to providing access to progression pathways with and through music for children from backgrounds underrepresented in classical music remains a core principle throughout our work, and the recent launch of I’M IN (Inclusive Music INdex), our organisational self-assessment tool, has so far enabled us to support and challenge 80 organisations working in and with music to build a more inclusive approach that welcomes, nurtures and values talented, diverse young musicians.
Quite simply, we aim to nurture children’s initial sparks of musical interest to grow into flames – a love for music that will burn brightly throughout their lives, whatever their future path.
