About us
Who we are
Music and the Deaf is the only UK charity entirely dedicated to providing access, education and opportunities in music for deaf children, young people and adults.
Hearing loss shouldn’t be a barrier to enjoying and making music. It is proven that participation in music can play a crucial role in a person’s development: it promotes inclusivity, teaches young people how to work together, builds confidence, develops communications skills, and provides a vital outlet for self-expression.
Through workshops in schools and the community, teacher training, talks and performances, Music and the Deaf has engaged thousands of deaf and hearing children and adults. Our ground breaking projects such as the Deaf Youth Orchestra project, Frequalise and The FORTE Ensemble, raise awareness of the issues and difficulties surrounding deafness, and combat the sense of isolation that many deaf people can face, encouraging and supporting them in their musical learning.
We believe that being able to participate in music making greatly assists in a person’s social, emotional, and intellectual development, regardless of their level of hearing, and we will continue to strive to enrich lives through music.
