About us

Who we are

Mosaic - supporting bereaved children is a charity which supports children and young people across the county of Dorset, offering them help and support to come to terms with the emotions they feel following the loss of someone they love. Founded in 2007, we have grown into an organisation which is very close to its community,  supports more than 400 children and young people a year, and last year raised more than £490,000 in fundraising in order to fund our services.

We pay for independent, qualified counsellors to help those who are struggling with their grief and whose schoolwork may be affected. Our outcomes make it possible for young people to understand they are not alone, to talk about their feelings and to manage them.   Mosaic also trains more than 200 teachers and other professionals a year on how to talk about bereavement and recognise the signs of distress.    We run weekend and holiday activities for families, and a residential weekend for bereaved children, celebrating the memories of those they have lost.

With our Trustees, volunteers, counsellors and staff, we are proud of the beneficial impact we have on those who are struggling, and of the way in which we work with a close Dorset community.

Our culture and values

Mosaic supports a culture which celebrates openness, kindness and humility.

We are here to help the children and young people who may be struggling with their feelings of grief and loss, following the death of a friend or family member.

In our working practices, we reflect on the service we offer, on how we go about our work and on how we can improve what we do.  Every member of staff is encouraged to speak openly about their experiences and to be engaged in our many activities.

With our Board of Trustees, volunteers and counsellors, the staff are assured of honesty and strong support, enabling us to go forward with certainty and confidence.  Safeguarding training is mandatory, and we have a performance approach which prioritises learning and active engagement.

Equality, diversity and inclusion policy

We have an equality, diversity and inclusion policy which applies to all staff as well as volunteers.

Mosaic is committed to promoting equality of opportunity for all, and to ensuring that no individual is discriminated against in recruitment, training or the planning and delivery of any of our activities.  We are committed to equality of opportunity in its employment policies and practices relating to existing and potential employees, sessional workers, volunteers and Trustees.

We aim to ensure that the values of equality, diversity, and respect for all are embedded into everything that we do, whether that relates to our counselling services, training programme or activities for young people.

As a responsible charity, we carry out a biennual equality impact review and report on this.
