About us
Who we are
At Leeds Mencap we are passionate about supporting children and young people with learning disabilities and their families to enable them to feel empowered and live the life they choose. For parents and carers we provide tailored information, advice and guidance as well as emotional support and opportunities to build friendships and networks of support. We run an inclusive nursery (Jimbo’s Community Nursery) which includes a specialist playroom and development opportunities for very young children with learning disabilities/additional needs. As children grow up we offer youth clubs, playschemes and social groups which support children and young people with learning disabilities until they are 25, giving them the opportunity to develop their skills, abilities and friendships. We also know that life can be tough for siblings and so we have a group where the brothers and sisters of the person with the learning disability can have some time to themselves.
In addition to being the base for our services and Jimbo’s nursery, the Vinery Centre has excellent specialist facilities (Changing Places toilet, sensory room, soft play room, outdoor play area and equipment) and multi-functional rooms that are available for hire to community groups and other organisations. The vision of the centre was to create a vibrant welcoming place in which the local community and learning disability community could share space. The centre is well used and we have a good reputation for flexibility and affordability. During the pandemic Leeds Mencap played a key role in the partnership that established a community hub project in the local area to provide emergency support and build up community resilience. We are continuing our contribution as a partner in our local Community Anchor partnership.
