About us
Who we are
Lambeth Mediation Service (LMS) is an independent, registered charitable company with over 30
years of experience helping to resolve conflict in the community through mediation.
Mediation can resolve even the most deep-rooted disputes. It has the affirmative potential to
challenge perceptions, question assumptions and change attitudes. Our charity was founded on this
principle over thirty years ago by Lambeth residents in response to key community issues.
We work closely with partners in Housing, Community Safety, Family Support, Social Services and
other oraginsations to achieve our aims. We are members of the London Community Mediation
Council and have a history of successful projects with the Metropolitan Police, Ministry of Justice,
Restorative Justice Council, and other local organisations, including schools and fellow charities.
In the coming year we plan to further develop our work with mediation and restorative justice; to
raise awareness of our service and to develop new projects.
Our Charitable Objectives
- To promote for the public benefit, predominantly but not exclusive in the London Borough of Lambeth and with a view to preservation of public order, the provision of services directed towards mediation and conciliation between persons, organisations and groups who are involved in dispute or inter-personal conflict where that dispute or conflict results from or may lead to acts of nuisance, vandalism, racial abuse or breach of the peace.
- To advance the education of the public, especially in the London Borough of Lambeth, in methods of such mediation and conciliation and, in particular, the natures and causes of such dispute and means of managing it.
Our Services
We deal with many issues of community conflict including anti-social behaviour, harassment,
assault and neighbourhood disputes around noise, pets, boundaries, parking and littering. We
are currently developing our family and shuttle mediation services, and are reinstating our Conflict
Surgery programme, which offers 1-1 guidance and support to local residents experiencing conflict.
We have a team of around 20 volunteer mediators, who reflect the cultural diversity of the local
community. Our volunteer base continues to grow; attracting people with a wide variety of
experience and skills, all committed to providing conflict resolution services in the borough.
Our Staff
We have a small and dedicated staff team who manage the service and support our volunteers in
delivering services.
Our Trustees
The Charity is governed by a Board of Trustees, currently four. The Board meets every two months
and is responsible for the strategic direction of the charity and for monitoring performance.
