About us
Who we are
Kangaroos is a registered charity, based in mid Sussex, providing a range of fun, social and recreational activities, clubs and outings in the local community for children, teenagers and adults with severe learning disabilities, additional physical, sensory and medical needs and extreme behavioural difficulties. We provide a lifelong service - our oldest member is 43!
We believe that people living with a learning and/or physical disability or a long-term illness should have the same choices, quality of life opportunities and aspirations as others. We are the only non-specialist regular provider for children and adults with complex needs in mid-Sussex.
Our year round tailored clubs enable our members to gain independence, build confidence and have an enriched social life with their peers. People with learning disabilities have less opportunity to socialise outside of school or college and find it difficult to maintain friendships, which can lead to social isolation, marginalisation and affect wellbeing and mental health. Offering life-long support is a vital component to our work, enabling our members to retain their connection to each other.
We run 450 sessions a year, which represents 2,300 hours of activity and over 17,000 person hours. Activities range from craft sessions, keep fit, visits to farms, zoos and theme parks, cinema trips, train trips to the seaside, social evenings at the pub, camping and short holidays in the UK.
