Justice Africa is an independent non-governmental organisation which began as an advocacy organisation and research institute in 1999, and has become a platform to amplify the voices of Africa’s civic activists and to foster solidarity between them. We advocate for citizen participation in decision-making on issues of peace, justice and democracy. We undertake research and design process-oriented programmes based on consultation with affected communities and partnerships with like-minded organisations. These principles underpin our work and have produced distinctive contributions to advocacy, research and practice on sensitive issues and in conflict-affected contexts, notably in South Sudan, where we have an office.
Justice Africa’s work is based on the understanding that peace, justice and rights are interdependent and must be pursued through processes defined by the people most affected. We support other African civil society and diaspora activists in the spirit of the Pan-African slogan, ‘Nothing about us without us!’ We promote understanding and action on pressing issues affecting the continent, by means of seminars, conferences, coalitions, research and publications, advocacy and direct engagement with policymakers.
Among our activities have been a focus on civil society and peace in Sudan and South Sudan; civil and political rights in Eritrea; Pan-African initiatives including support for the African Union in its project to create a human rights memorial; a project to develop African agendas for peace and security, as well as research and advocacy on social issues such as youth, HIV/AIDS and conflict.
