About us
Who we are
Inter Care was founded in 1974 and is a registered charity (no. 275637).
Inter Care provides free medical aid to rural clinics and hospitals (currently around 70) in 3 sub-Saharan African countries: Malawi, Sierra Leone and Tanzania.
Inter Care aims to collect surplus health care goods and medicines (donated and purchased), for the two-fold purpose of medical waste reduction and to send regular consignments of vital medical aid to rural health units across sub-Saharan Africa.
Partner health units in sub-Saharan Africa then provide our donated supplies, free of charge to their patients.
Our culture and values
Inter Care’s vision is a world where people do not needlessly suffer due to a lack of medical resources. We believe that every individual, no matter where you are in the world, should have access to healthcare provision.
We know that local healthcare systems in the countries we support, need strengthening and we do this by:
- Donating medicines to fill critical gaps in essential drug supply, ensuring continuous patient care.
- Donating Health Care Goods to assist health units in Malawi, Sierra Leone and Tanzania with everyday basic supplies to provide free support to the most disadvantaged patients.
- Our support reduces the financial burden on the community and the hospital, allowing funds to be redirected toward other healthcare needs.
Inter Care follows the WHO guidelines and we supply drugs which are on the Essential Medicines list of each country we operate in.
The Charity holds a valid MHRA Wholesale Dealer’s Licence (WDA(H)). In order to retain the licence Inter Care maintains a comprehensive set of Standard Operating Procedures and undergoes regular inspection.
Medicines are only obtained from Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Wholesalers who also hold a valid MHRA Wholesale Dealers Licence within the UK. Where we purchase overseas, the equivalent licence will be obtained.
Healthcare goods are obtained (usually donated) from the NHS, the general public and are also donated by medical supply companies.
Inter Care is committed to satisfying the needs of each partner health unit. The contents of a consignment are dictated by the medical requirements indicated by that partner, and the level of medical expertise of its staff.
Equality, diversity and inclusion policy
Inter Care is committed to encouraging equality, diversity and inclusion among our employees and volunteers, and eliminating unlawful discrimination.
The aim is for everyone to feel respected and able to give their best.
We commit to creating a working environment free of bullying, harassment, victimisation and unlawful discrimination, promoting dignity and respect for all, and where individual differences and the contributions of all staff are recognised and valued.
This commitment includes sharing the policy with all employees and volunteers so they are aware of their rights and responsibilities.
Inter Care - in providing charitable services - is also committed against unlawful discrimination of its partners in Africa or the public.
