About us
Who we are
Group B Strep Support (GBSS) is the UK's only charity working to stop group B Strep infection in babies. The charity was founded in 1996 by Jane and Robert Plumb, parents of Theo Plumb, who died aged 17 hours from group B Strep infection.
Group B Streptococcus (group B Strep or Strep B) is the most common cause of severe infection in newborn babies, causing sepsis, pneumonia or meningitis. On average, every day in the UK two babies develop group B Strep infection, one of those sick babies dies every week and one survivor is left with long-term disability.
Today the charity works in five main areas across the UK:
- Providing information and support to families affected by group B Strep.
- Raising awareness of group B Strep among new and expectant parents.
- Providing education services to health professionals so they are better able to prevent, spot and treat group B Strep infection in babies.
- Providing a voice for all those affected by group B Strep infection by lobbying politicians and other influential bodies to change NHS and Government policy around group B Strep.
- Supporting research into group B Strep, primarily through patient and public involvement.
We're a small team - including this role, we'll be 6 members of staff (with growth planned for 2025 and beyond) and have consistently punched about our weight to bring about improvements to awareness, knowledge, policy and research into preventing and treating group B Strep infection in babies.
