About us
Who we are
Global Covenant Partners (GCP) is a recently incorporated nonprofit with a mission of coordinating and facilitating integration of efforts to prevent religion-‐related violence, protect its targets, and rehabilitate its victims. The Global Covenant is a growing network of religious leaders, scholars, civil society organizations, and diplomats dedicated to Global Covenant values. It relies on the deepest resources and wisdom of distinctive religious traditions to help build resilience and promote peace and justice at local, national, regional and global levels. GCP is governed by an internationally renowned Board of Directors which is committed to moving this mission forward.
Global Covenant participants respect the deep-‐seated differences within and between religions. Though religious traditions may disagree about the causes of violence, religions have profound commitments to protect their communities, beliefs, and heritage. They each have time-‐tested, deeply rooted traditions and rituals for mediating conflict and enabling peace.
The Global Covenant is currently focusing its efforts on inhibiting religion-‐related violence across the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe in efforts to prevent and reduce violence and address the forcible displacement of millions of people across the Mediterranean Basin. No one religion, organization, or government alone can succeed in this work. Impact will require facilitating concerted and integrated action among participating religious, educational, political, and civil society groups.
GCP invites religious communities to mobilize their deepest wisdom and resources to inhibit violence. GCP invites conflict survivors, including women and youth, to be part of the design and implementation of pilot initiatives to prevent and alleviate victimization and suffering. GCP invites scholars across different traditions to advance quantitative and qualitative analysis to diagnose the underlying social, economic, political, and theological factors that may contribute to religion-‐related violence. GCP invites diplomats and government actors to partner in addressing gaps in laws and policies and provide protections. GCP invites civil society and local service providers to share their experience and successful methods for building more stable, resilient communities. Religious leaders, scholars, diplomats, and activist each have roles to play. GCP will facilitate the integration of these activities so that the sectors, in partnership with each other, can increase their impact on preventing religion-‐related violence.
GCP is pursuing four main interactive paths to the reduction of religion-‐related violence:
- Research: Analyze causes and drivers of violence and test tools that effectively mitigate violent conflict.
- Dialogue: Articulate commitment to the Global Covenant via interreligious dialogue and scriptural study.
- Strategy: Mobilize partners, resources, and tools to reduce and prevent violent conflict in the Mediterranean Basin.
- Media: Disseminate learning, best practice, and feedback via public engagement, social media, and online platform.
