Friends of Victoria Park Stretford

Who we are

Local residents in Stretford are affected by neglect on a daily basis, either through our own lived experience or through our friends and neighbours. Friends of Victoria Park Stretford formed in 2001 because many of us could see the opportunities for improving the lives of people in Stretford that this green space run by the community for the community could offer. We are part of a community movement to change our area and put pressure on Trafford Council to prioritise regeneration and finally implement a strategy for the area.

There are 1516 supporters from the local area and 12 members of the Trustee Board (all local), including 2 local councillors. 80 regular volunteers develop and run activity. Local businesses such as Trading Places, SIP Club, M&S, Network Rail are supporters. The users are residents of Stretford and neighbouring areas who contribute through consultations, surveys at park events and the AGM.

The Community Hub in Victoria Park is a very special place in our town as it is a rare public focal point and a place that people can meet that is free from political or religious connections. The design of the new building will make the Hub even more inclusive. We have worked with the Autistic Society for the Greater Manchester Area to ensure the building is autism friendly. There will be a Changing Places toilet as well as a standard disability toilet. Local Asian residents have advised on toilet needs.

With the new Community Hub in place we can re-start our old groups such as the arts and crafts, fitness, sports and gardening for health. Better facilities mean we can launch new groups such as lunch clubs for the elderly and a weekly Friday evening youth group to try and curb anti-social behaviour. We have a waiting list for Stretford Shedders and want to start a junior parkrun. We have planning permission in place and a 25-year lease from Trafford Council.
