About us

Who we are

FLAG DV (Free Legal Advice Group for Domestic Violence) is a specialist charity offering free legal advice and court support to people affected by domestic abuse across Thames Valley and Hampshire.

We work to break down the barriers that prevent survivors from accessing justice—providing clear legal advice on family law matters such as child contact, financial arrangements, and protective court orders. Our support helps survivors understand their rights, navigate difficult systems, and make safe, informed decisions for themselves and their families.

Our services are trauma-informed, inclusive, and survivor-centred. We provide free translation services to ensure accessibility for those whose first language is not English, and we actively adapt our approach to meet the needs of marginalised communities.

In addition to legal advice, we run a Family Court Support service in Berkshire, developed in response to the rising number of survivors facing complex family law legal proceedings alone. Through this service, survivors receive practical and emotional support to prepare for hearings, apply for court protections, and understand family court procedures. Where possible, we also accompany survivors to court to offer reassurance and advocacy in person.

As a small, ambitious charity, we are committed to driving systemic change as well as supporting individuals. We use anonymised data and insights from our frontline work to advocate for trauma-aware, survivor-informed improvements to the justice system.

At FLAG DV, we believe in supporting not just the people who use our services—but the people who deliver them. We prioritise wellbeing across our team, offering guidance, supervision, and reflective spaces to help manage the emotional impact of our work.

Our culture and values

Our Culture and Values

At FLAG DV, our work is grounded in values that reflect our deep respect for the people we support and the team who make our services possible. We are committed to fostering a compassionate, inclusive, and empowering environment—for survivors and staff alike.

Empowerment
We believe in the power of expert knowledge delivered with empathy. Our legal and court support services are designed to equip survivors with the tools, understanding, and confidence they need to navigate complex legal systems. We don’t speak for people—we work alongside them, helping them take control of their own journey toward safety and justice.

Protection
Safety is at the heart of everything we do. Whether supporting someone to apply for a protective order or plan for safe attendance at court, we provide guidance that is informed, sensitive, and always survivor-led. We connect individuals with trusted resources to help them protect themselves and their families—both during legal proceedings and beyond.

Choice
We respect each person’s right to decide what’s best for them. Our role is to offer clear, compassionate advice and support so survivors can make informed decisions at their own pace. In every interaction, we prioritise autonomy, dignity, and tailored support—because no two journeys are the same.

What this means for our team:
We foster a working culture where reflective practice, emotional support, and wellbeing are just as important as professional growth. We value lived experience, deep listening, and collaborative learning. Whether you're joining us in a frontline role or supporting our mission behind the scenes, you’ll be part of a passionate, purpose-driven team committed to social justice and systemic change.

Equality, diversity and inclusion policy

At FLAG DV, we know that creating an inclusive, equitable environment doesn’t depend on size—it depends on commitment. As a small team, we are actively working to embed equality, diversity, and inclusion into everything we do, from how we support survivors to how we recruit and collaborate.

We recognise that our current team does not yet reflect the full diversity of the communities we serve. But we are honest about where we are, and we are clear about where we want to go. We are committed to learning, improving, and making meaningful change—both within our organisation and through the systems we seek to influence.

What this means in practice:

  • We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, particularly those who are underrepresented in the charity and legal advice sectors.
  • We build awareness through ongoing learning, reflection, and openness to feedback—knowing this work is continuous, not a tick-box exercise.
  • We aim to create a culture of dignity, safety, and respect, where lived experience and identity are not just recognised, but valued.
  • We may be a small team—but we are serious about leading with integrity and advocating for a more inclusive and just future.
