About us
Who we are
We have a proud history, and since our foundation in 1918 have helped create and develop the modern fire and rescue service. We are the only recognised dedicated trade union working to support fire and rescue personnel across the UK.
We aim to:
- Provide a leading, independent voice for firefighters that helps improves fire and rescue services
- Ensure the expertise and experience of our members is heard locally, nationally and internationally within government and beyond
- Protect the safety and interests of the public and our members, enabling them to enjoy a good quality of life, including by preventing cuts or damaging changes to fire and rescue services
- Improve the working conditions of our members and protect them from discrimination and unfair or illegal treatment by representing them in the workplace
- Help our members develop professionally by developing new and existing skills
Equality, diversity and inclusion policy
The Fire Brigades Union stands for equality – for an inclusive fire and rescue service, open to everyone, which reflects the communities it serves.
Discrimination, harassment and bullying have no place in our service. But recent investigations have underlined how widespread these issues are.
As FBU reps and equalities sections know first-hand, the failings go right to the top. Fire service leaders have often been part of the problem.
As the only democratic and representative body for firefighters and control room staff, we will take a leading role in transforming our service.
It’s our service, our union and our duty to make it happen.
Equality Matters.
