London’s Screen Archives enables Londoners to see their past come alive on film.
Managed by Film London, we are a unique network of historic film collections working together on a common mission. Between us we hold London’s rich film heritage, from feature films to the tiniest scrap of home movie, with particular strengths in public information films, newsreels, films from industry and business or family films. Individually, these tell personal stories of how life has been lived: collectively, they tell bigger stories of changing neighbourhoods, patterns of work, travel, commerce, leisure and governance.
Through our work these fragile and often-neglected films can be seen and enjoyed. This precious master material has an immeasurable value in civic life, cultural cohesion, education and well-being. Audiences tell us how moving they find these glimpses of London’s past: such material stirs personal memories, gives a strong sense of place and community, offers the chance to learn about local, regional and film history and is a pleasure to watch.
In summer 2014, we are embarking on a major project lead by Film London and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, British Film Institute and Creative Skillset - London: A Bigger Picture - and we are hoping lots of people will volunteer to make this a big success! The project will give people in 15 of London’s outer boroughs a chance to see and learn about historic film of their area and encourage them to share their own home movie records of the region’s past. A travelling cinema-in-a-van — the ‘KinoVan’ — will take specially curated programmes of home movies, classic newsreels and old public information films themed around different areas of London out and about to festivals, carparks, schools and town centres. The public will get the chance to learn about old film formats and help to identify new film for the archives and there will be dedicated activities for young people and schools. Volunteers can help us sarch for film, identify what we find, share news of the project, hold local screenings and help out at the KinoVan. Do get in touch if you'd like to help!
