About us
Who we are
EquipAfrica Charitable Trust is a non-profit organisation that aims to improve healthcare in Africa through the provision of essential medical equipment and training to healthcare staff in unsustainable and low standard hospitals.
The charity was set up after our founder visited Nigeria in the summer of 2013 to work in one of the local hospitals (General Hospital Lagos) to gain experience as a medical student. She discovered that the hospital was very poorly equipped and people were dying from things that could be prevented- the emergency department lacked equipment as basic and vital as a thermometer.
We started off with the dream of raising just £200 to buy one heart blood pressure monitor, to make even the slightest difference.
Our first project was with General Hospital Lagos in the Lagos State Emergency Service (LASEMS) department. We succeeded in raising £2,500 to buy medical equipment, shipped them to the hospital in Nigeria and are currently in the process of waiting on an audit on mortality rates that will indicate the change we have enabled.
We intend on reaching across Africa, and we have started forming relationships with hospitals and officials in Chad and Somalia.
