About us
Who we are
Dr Johnson’s House is a Grade 1 listed small historic town house in the City of London. Home to Samuel Johnson in the middle of the 18th century, it was here he wrote the first authoritative Dictionary of the English language (1755), amongst many other great works.
Today we operate an independent, fully accredited museum and a registered charity (no. 1122396) in the historic house. We currently have three members of staff and a dedicated team of volunteers who together run a vibrant programme of education workshops, exhibitions and events to celebrate language, literature, and explore the many ways the various residents of Johnson's household triumphed in the face of adversity. We are on the cusp of an exciting redevelopment phase, which you can play an instrumental role in!
Our charitable objectives are:
- to preserve Dr Johnson’s House, 17 Gough Square, London for the use of the general public
- to advance and encourage learning and scholarship
