About us
Who we are
The Colombian Caravana was formally established as a charity in 2011. Prior to that a number of Caravana members had been involved in supporting two international delegations of legal professionals to Colombia, on the invitation of Colombian lawyers at risk, in 2008 and 2010.
Since then, the Caravana has gone from strength to strength. We’re a small membership organisation, supported by part-time coordination services and an active and committed board.
The Caravana board is comprised of lawyers, academics, and NGO professionals – all of us are dedicated to strengthening and building our network of volunteer members so that we can provide the best profile and support possible to Colombian lawyers at-risk.
We continue to organise biennial international delegations of legal professionals to Colombia and returned from our most recent one in September 2018. We work closely with our Colombian partners to increase awareness of their situation and provide international solidarity and support to aid their protection. In the intervening years, we carry out advocacy in the UK and abroad on related issues, make legal interventions in strategic cases or on relevant issues, and respond with urgent actions when lawyers and human rights defenders find themselves in situations of risk. We also frequently support the tours of Colombian human rights defenders and lawyers to Europe and hold events for members.
