About us

Who we are

Clean Air Fund is a global philanthropic organisation working with governments, funders, business and campaigners to create a future where everyone breathes clean air.

Play: About Clean Air Fund, a global philanthropic foundation tackling air pollution

We fund and partner with organisations that promote air quality data, build public demand for clean air and drive policy change. We influence and support decision makers to act on air pollution. We also amplify the clean air movement’s impact by connecting people, increasing resources to the field and sharing evidence of what works.

In towns and cities across the UK, air pollution frequently hits illegal levels that are harmful to everyone, especially those most vulnerable. High air pollution harms public health and cuts lives short.

In recent years, air pollution levels have regularly exceeded national legal limits and international guidelines set by the World Health Organization (WHO). Court cases (in the UK’s High Court and the European Court of Justice) have shown the UK Government is “systematically and persistently” breaching air pollution limits for nitrogen dioxide, which is toxic to humans. Ministers have been ordered to provide air quality plans to address the problem.

Our culture and values

Our approach

Our multi-level strategy focuses on three areas:

  • Data: Putting compelling evidence in the right hands
  • Demand: Growing public awareness and political will
  • Drive: Influencing decision-makers to commit to ambitious clean air measures

We fund and partner with organisations across the globe that promote data, build public demand for clean air and drive action. We engage and support decision-makers to act on clean air, bringing together funders, researchers, policy makers, businesses and campaigners to strengthen the air quality cause. We also work with communities disproportionately affected by air pollution.

We work where the need and potential for impact is greatest, including the EU, Ghana, India and the UK. We also run a global programme to raise air pollution up the international agenda and encourage decision makers to take action. Our global themes include data, health, campaigns and private sector engagement.

Equality, diversity and inclusion policy

As an employer, we are committed to welcome people from all backgrounds regardless of their gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, race, religion, ethnicity, age, neurodiversity, disability status, returning parents, carers or any other aspect which makes them unique. We particularly welcome applicants from under-represented groups to apply and would encourage you to let us know if there are steps we can take to ensure that the recruitment process enables you to present yourself in a way that makes you comfortable. We are committed to ensuring the safety and protection of our employees from all forms of harm. We are also a member of the Disability Confident scheme.
