About us
Who we are
The Cancer Treatment and Research Trust (CTRT) was founded in 1985. Its main role is to raise funding for research into why and how cancers develop; better ways of detecting and monitoring cancers; and finding and testing new treatments. The CTRT has played a key role in funding the world class research work undertaken by consultants and their teams at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, Northwood and Charing Cross and Hammersmith Hospitals in west London. Each location has a separately funded branch of the charity.
At Mount Vernon Cancer Centre (see attached), the CTRT has made significant contributions to research in germ cell (testicular) tumours, kidney cancer, lung cancer, melanoma, ovarian and rare gynaecological cancers. At Charing Cross and Hammersmith Hospitals (see attached), the main interests are similar, rare ovarian tumours, germ cell tumours, lung cancer but they also include a particular emphasis on gestational trophoblastic disease.
Funds raised by the CTRT are used in several ways. Most of the money is used to pay the salaries of clinical research fellows, PhD students and laboratory technicians who are involved in cancer research in these areas. The CTRT also funds equipment used in research and contributes to items that can help patients during their treatment. A major appeal coordinated through the CTRT in 2012, raised almost £2 million for a new clinical trials unit and chemotherapy day unit at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre.
Our mission is to enable our consultants and scientists to continue turning research ideas into exciting research studies and new life-saving treatments.
