About us
Who we are
The British Mycological Society is open to all who are interested in supporting, promoting and learning about the exciting world of fungi. Sections of the BMS are devoted to different aspects of the fungal world including cutting-edge research in fungal science, the conservation and recording of fungal fruitbodies and the provision of educational resources for use at all ages and experience.
The Society was founded in 1896 to promote the scientific study of fungi in all their diversity. Since then it has grown to be one of the major mycological societies in the world.
Activities and operations are governed by a Council, supported by four Committees: Fungal Biology Research Committee; Fungal Education and Outreach Committee; Field Mycology and Conservation Committee; Publications Committee. Day-to day-management and operations are carried out by a small team of staff.
Our overarching mission is to promote fungal science internationally. Our current strategy defines how we aim to ensure the Society’s long-term sustainability and resilience, improve key resources and services, broaden our outreach and raise the profile of the BMS nationally and internationally, and support the growing community of fungus experts and enthusiasts.
