About us

Who we are

Bristol & Weston Hospitals Charity (formerly Above & Beyond) is doing great things to improve the health and happiness of every patient in all 10 of our NHS hospitals in Bristol city centre, South Bristol and Weston-super-Mare.

Our hospitals include:

  • Bristol Dental Hospital
  • Bristol Eye Hospital
  • Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre
  • Bristol Heart Institute
  • Bristol Royal Hospital for Children
  • Bristol Royal Infirmary
  • South Bristol Community Hospital
  • St Michael’s Hospital
  • Unity Sexual Health
  • Weston General Hospital

Together with our local NHS, we push the limits of what’s possible. We go above and beyond to transform the experiences patients have in our hospitals, wherever the need is greatest. We bring moments of joy, comfort and hope to those who need it most. And we are committed to helping our hospitals go that extra mile.

Working with University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW), these are our promises:

  • We’ll fund the little things that make a big difference
  • We’ll fund the creation of healing environments and spaces to provide dignity, privacy and empathy
  • We’ll champion equitable access for everyone
  • We’ll fund world-class technology, treatments, knowledge and medical research.

Together we can do great things.

Our culture and values

Our values of 'together we can', 'above and beyond' and 'full-hearted goodness' flow through everything we do. They are our guiding light that informs the way we behave, and the choices we make - both to each other as colleagues and to our beneficiaries, supporters and stakeholders.

Equality, diversity and inclusion policy

We aim to:

  • Create a culture of respect, inclusion, and equity
  • Ensure all individuals are given equal access to our support, employment opportunities, and volunteering roles
  • Regularly review our practices to remove potential barriers to participation and opportunities
  • Provide appropriate training to employees and volunteers to support understanding of equality, diversity, and inclusion

Our Community - We will value our differences and benefit from our diversity of thought, background, and experience. We will reflect the diversity of those that we work with and for.

Our Behaviours – Our leaders will act as role models and champions. Individually and collectively we will uphold our shared vision and stand up to challenge behaviours that don’t reflect it.

Our Progress – Data will be central to our decision making in helping us measure and drive change. We won’t stop listening and learning and will be honest and transparent about our progress.

We will not tolerate discrimination, harassment, or victimisation in any form. This includes:

  • Direct discrimination (treating someone less favourably due to a protected characteristic)
  • Indirect discrimination (policies or practices that disproportionately affect certain groups)
  • Harassment (unwanted behaviour related to a protected characteristic)
  • Victimisation (treating someone unfairly because they made or supported a complaint under this policy).

We are committed to avoiding unlawful discrimination in employment and against any individual or group who uses our facilities or services.

We are committed to creating a work environment free of harassment and bullying, where everyone is treated with dignity and respect and we are committed to high standards of openness, honesty, probity and accountability.

Further detail on our policy and procedures is available on request.
