About us
Who we are
The Barnes Workhouse Fund was established out of the assets of the old Barnes Workhouse (built 1758) situated on Barnes Common. Our grantmaking policy aims to help the most vulnerable individuals in the Barnes SW13 community and to support the Richmond Voluntary Sector delivering vital services to Barnes residents. Our nine, enthusiastic Charity Directors all live in Barnes.
We pride ourselves in the strong links we have with the Richmond Voluntary Sector organisations with whom we work closely to achieve our common goals. Collaboration is a priority and at our hugely popular Annual Meeting, we encourage our Referral Agencies and Beneficiary Organisations to report on achievements and challenges, make new introductions, and seek out new partnerships.
Our sheltered housing, built in 1975 in the centre of Barnes, comprises 38 one and two bedroom flats and bungalows and, set in large gardens, and accommodates people retired from work who have lived in Barnes or Richmond previously, or have strong links to the area. This thriving community provides a sought-after residence in the heart of Barnes. Afternoon teas and occasional lunches, allow our Board to participate and help them get to know the residents, one or two of whom can tell them about the Barnes they have known since childhood!
