About us

Who we are

Alliance Publishing Trust (Charity number 1116744) aims to facilitate the exchange of ideas among people in philanthropy working for social change. We aspire to contribute to building an effective, accountable and thriving philanthropy field by being a ‘critical friend’ to philanthropy worldwide.

To do this we produce Alliance magazine, the leading quarterly publication for philanthropy and social investment worldwide and respected in the sector for nearly thirty years. Providing a special in-depth feature on some key aspect of philanthropy and social investment, with contributors from around the world and expert guest editors as well as interviews, news, book reviews and conference reports.

We also produce over 700 items of online content per year: providing premium interviews and articles published exclusively every Tuesday; daily free-to-read news, conference reports and a space for thinking, debate and peer exchange among philanthropy practitioners worldwide; weekly coverage of climate and gender philanthropy, monthly columns and more.

In addition to written content, we convene up to 19 events a year to discuss the latest topics in philanthropy with speakers and attendees across the globe.

With a core staff team based in London, valued freelance support and a team of representatives around the world (see org chart below) we  work with the leading organisations and practictioners worldwide to deliver our charitable mission.

We have strong organisational momentum, have a strong staff team in place and are in a positive period of growth as we look to meet our long term strategy for 2030.

Our culture and values

As an organisation asked to cover an undercovered space we believe in integrity, accountability and transparency and strive to maintain all three acrosss all that we do. All staff members work with people from every continent and culture and we collectively seek to be diverse and inclusive in terms of who we platform and how we platform them.

As an organisation we have a strong focus on being as horizontal as possible with every member of staff provided the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the activities and future direction of both their own role and the organisation as a whole. We value collaboration - both internally and externally - and welcome a diversity of perspectives and opinions in all that we do.

As an employer we have a strong focus on work/life balance and the wellbeing of our employees. This is reflected in being a four-day week employer (32 hours across four days for full salary) but also in the way that each role is thoughtfully constructed to be deliverable within the time allowed. We offer flexible working hours, hybrid working and work plans tailored to the individual and their needs not just the organisation.

We are also an employer with a strong focus on retention and development. Once inducted and embedded, staff are supported to be independent in their roles, make meangingful decisions and think creatively about the evolution of their role within the organisation. This approach has not only helped the organsation grow and improve but it has resulted in no staff departures since 2017.

In line with our values, we are a registered Living Wage Employer, a four-day week employer and always show the salary in any recruitment. We are also committed to annual pay reviews for all employees.

Equality, diversity and inclusion policy

APT is committed to equal opportunities for all staff, trustees, contractor and other partners. The aim of the approach is to ensure that the talents and skills of all employees are utilized to the full in order to achieve APT’s objectives. Policies and practices will be kept under review to ensure that all staff and applicants are treated fairly. No employee, customer or applicant shall receive unfair treatment on the grounds of age, colour, creed, ethnic or national origin, marital status, nationality, physical or mental disability, race, religious belief, sex or sexual orientation. No one shall be disadvantaged by conditions or requirements other than those based on the occupational or business requirements. APT is committed to a programme of action to ensure that its practice in this area is fully effective, including the development of guidance and training as appropriate.
