About us
Who we are
The African Wildlife Conservation Fund (AWCF) is a small, hands-on, non-profit organisation dedicated to making a difference for the wildlife and people of southern Africa. We are a registered charity in the UK and US but we work in the beautiful and remote south-east corner of Zimbabwe. We are a local team of zoologists, education experts, scouts, trackers and community liasion officers.
Components of our research and conservation work include monitoring population dynamics of and threats to endangered African wild dogs; researching the impact of climate change on this endangered species; monitoring annual population trends of all large carnivores; supporting anti-poaching units; treating African wild dogs (and indeed any wild animal) caught or injured by human-set snare wires and vaccinating domestic dog populations against rabies to prevent transmission into the wildlife. Our education program which covers 108 primary schools includes delivering face-to-face in-school conservation lessons; provision of conservation resources; establishment and maintenance of libraries; provision of solar reading lights and solar systems for key libraries; literacy programs; inter-school environmental competitions; field trips into wildlife areas; a secondary school and university scholarship program and support for conservation clubs. Our community programs are in their infancy and include vocational training for community members; a ‘fence guardian’ program (to provide employment, reduce conflict and reduce poaching); a water project for a key community and some support for school-based nutritional gardens and other income generating projects. Our policy dialogue component aims to get important results to policy and decision makers.
We are a fun, dynamic group of young people, dedicated to what we do. But we are missing a team member with fundraising and PR skills, which we so desperately need to help us keep our programs afloat and even to expand. There is so much that could be done; the potential to make a difference is huge. Will you join us and help out?
