About us
Who we are
Action Ethiopia was established in 2000 in response to the extreme challenges faced by small-scale farmers and the natural environment in Ethiopia. The founders, the Langdon/Sandford Family, have a long history of connection with Ethiopia having lived and worked in the country since the 1920’s. In the late 1990s, they were approached by an enthusiastic group of Ethiopia professionals determined to bring sustainable solutions to Ethiopian farmers who eke out their living from farming in rapidly environmentally deteriorating isolated areas. This dedicated group eventually established SUNARMA (Sustainable Natural Resource Management Association) as a national Ethiopian NGO. Sunarma then approached Action Ethiopia to set up an office in the UK to give them easier access to western donors.
What makes us different In partnership with SUNARMA, Action Ethiopia reaches out to some of the most remote communities in Ethiopia where we are often the only NGO present. The unique difference is that, as mentioned above, the organisation was set up in the developing world, the south (Ethiopia) and has its office and support set up the North (UK)
Vision To see stable and empowered communities living in a sustainable and productive environment.
Context This is an exciting time for Action Ethiopia. We have recently conducted a review of our 20 years’ progress and a task group is working on developing our strategy and business plan for the coming three to five years. It is also a time when the world eagerly awaits accelerated action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and sustainable development following the COP26 summit in Glasgow, Scotland.
We are seeking to recruit new Trustees to strengthen the board at this critical time for Action Ethiopia. In addition to readiness to share our commitment to supporting the rural poor in Ethiopia, we wish to recruit those with skills and experience in the following areas:
Strategic development
Governance
Fundraising
Working within the UK political process
Campaigning
Well connected in the UK donor community
