About us

Who we are

Acid violence is the deliberate use of acid to attack another person. Acid causes the skin and flesh tissue to melt, often exposing and dissolving the bones below. Attacks are usually carried out on the face - causing maiming, disfigurement and blindness. Attacks cause almost indescribable pain, permanent disfigurement and devastating psychological consequences. A survivor needs immediate specialist medical treatment, sanctuary, reconstructive surgery, follow up physiotherapy, counselling and long-term support to rebuild their life. Survivors often require dozens of surgical procedures. Child victims require extra long-term specialist care from paediatric surgeons (reconstructive and ophthalmic), physiotherapists and counsellors – specialist skills that are often lacking in many countries in which acid violence is prevalent. ASTI is the only organisation in the world specifically devoted to work on acid violence at a global level. ASTI works with and has helped to form a network of six Acid Survivors Foundations in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Uganda. In addition to educating the public and raising awareness globally, ASTI provides treatment, care, reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation to survivors, trains in-country partners and medics, campaigns to end the crime through tougher legislation around the sale and distribution of acid, lobbies for tougher penalties for perpetrators and compensation for victims so that they can rebuild their lives and become financially independent.
