About us
Who we are
Ace of Clubs is a day centre for homeless and vulnerable people located just off Clapham High Street.
Every day up to 180 people come to us for support each day – many are homeless, and others are vulnerable and isolated. Many of them have significant support needs, including mental health issues, drug and alcohol addictions, offending behaviour and health issues.
They come for a hot meal, practical help and personal support. They also come for a warm welcome.
When asked what they thought Ace of Clubs did best, one client said, “Everything - you make people feel normal, and you make them feel like they're worth something, and you don't judge people. And it's safe, and your doors are always open.”
The need for Ace of Clubs is significant and ever-increasing. For example, in 2020, we served 37,711 meals. We have to respond to an increasingly challenging environment for our clients, particularly in the face of the pandemic, changing benefits and immigration regulations they are faced with.
Our small support team offer help around accommodation, benefits, health and a wide range of other issues. They also run or organise regular groups and classes aimed at helping Ace of Clubs service users make supportive connections and develop their confidence and skills.
As well as getting support from the Ace staff, the centre users can access partner agencies at one of the regular drop-in sessions. These include a nurse clinic, a mobile dental surgery, street homeless outreach workers and a legal advice clinic.
We have a small team of 5 staff – a Centre Manager, two Support Staff, a Chef and a van driver. They are supported by committed volunteers, many of whom come from the local community, and some of whom are from businesses and corporate organisation.
Ace of Clubs is a great place to work - you do have to be prepared to get stuck into everything, but you will also see how your hard work makes a positive difference to those who need it most.
