Job Description
Volunteer monitoring work with the IMB gives you the opportunity to make a real difference to people’s lives. You will listen to prisoners and people in immigration detention, talk to staff and see for yourself what is actually happening behind the walls.
The IMB is recruiting for new members at numerous prisons and at immigration detention centres across England and Wales, and at short term holding facilities across the UK. We are looking for people who live within approximately 30 miles (or one hour) of their closest establishment and can commit the time to make 2 to 3 visits per month, although this may be slightly higher during the first year of training and this can be flexible depending on the needs of the Board and the individual. Who are the IMB?
We’re a group of ordinary members of the public, doing an extraordinary job. As a passionate, personable individual, you could join us in making a difference. In this unpaid role, you’ll volunteer your talent and time towards securing a decent day-to-day life for every prisoner and detainee. Under the guidance of dedicated mentors and an extensive training programme, you’ll commit to a flexible schedule of visits to a local establishment each month. Although this is an unpaid role, we pay travel and subsistence expenses, childcare or carer costs and, in certain circumstances, contributions towards loss of earnings. Your observations will have an impact as your Board reports its findings to Ministers in His Majesty’s Government.
About the role
With unrestricted access to these unique environments, you’ll gain a rare insight into all aspects of life in custody. Impartial and highly influential, you can decide what shape your visits should take. As an independent monitor, you may spend time in a specific part of the establishment and choose to have your conversations with prisoners or detainees out of sight or hearing of a member of staff. As well as keeping a close eye on daily operations, you’ll play a crucial role in dealing with problems that arise. This could be in response to a confidential request to see a member of the IMB, or to observe the management of the more serious incidents that occur.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Set out how the individual events and programme as a whole will contribute to the empowerment of communities and work with the social impact team to set KPIs / tangible outcomes
- Responsible for the organisation and facilitation of events hosted by ADC that deliver on the organisational objectives and mirror ADC value
- Work with the wider marketing team to promote and advertise the events to the target audience, driving attendance and engagement
- Find and secure guest speakers who are subject matter experts in topics such as; WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene), civic advocacy and engagement, and the development and delivery of essential physical infrastructure, and work with them to deliver events and content that align with ADC’s objectives
- Solicit feedback from event attendees post-event and iterate future events format and content accordingly
Knowledge, Skills, Education, and Expertise
Essential
- Experience in events coordination and management
- A knowledge and understanding of international development
- Exceptional networking skills
- Experience of setting KPI’s or monitoring and evaluation
- Available to volunteer at least 7-10 hours a week
- Ability to actively take initiative and help set things up in a start-up environment

- Experience working with or in countries in East Africa
- Experience working in an early stage star-tup and gone through a scaling phase

You will listen without judgement to assess and provide tailored support to help those serving, who have served and their families to navigate life in and beyond military service. Some examples of support are securing funding for special equipment for someone with a disability, adaptions to a property so an older client can remain at home or funds for a rental deposit. Caseworkers also sign-post clients onto specialist local services for advice on benefits, housing, mental health, debt, finding work etc.

There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas who support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families. Some branches are divided into smaller divisions to ensure the best local service delivery. Each branch has a team of volunteer caseworkers, support volunteers, executive roles, and fundraisers.
Volunteer Caseworkers are the lifeblood of SSAFA, supporting a growing number of people in need of financial, practical, and emotional support. Clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like Iraq or Afghanistan.
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
The essential part of the role is visiting clients, so you will need access to a vehicle or another way to travel to meet clients at home or in a care home setting. As part of your local branch, you might have access to an office, but you can complete the administration part of the role from home as long as you have access to IT equipment and the internet.
What would you be doing?
- Contacting beneficiaries and arranging to meet them at a mutually convenient time.
- Meeting beneficiaries and completing a form to assess their circumstances, using good communication skills, empathy and understanding.
- Sign-posting clients onto local services providing specialist advice.
- Applying for funding on the behalf of the beneficiary through a specific process and system
- Arranging for the purchase of goods and services
- Keeping the beneficiary informed of their case progress.
- Liaise with the branch and regional office, regarding your availability.
- Keeping up to date with training and SSAFA news so that you are best able to support clients.
- Being a positive ambassador for SSAFA remembering that anyone you meet could be a potential client, volunteer, or fundraiser.
- Volunteering within the standards and values of SSAFA

- Access to a range additional e-learning courses as well as local opportunities for your personal and professional development.
- Local induction including assigning a person from the team who will be your main point of contact.

Our Branch provides lifelong support to anyone who has ever served, in the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force and their dependants. We also give support to those who has been in the Merchant Navy, Seafarers, Fishermen and their dependants, and British Airways staff past and present. Our main role is seeking welfare benevolent grants on behalf of clients who reside in the 26 counties in the Republic of Ireland. They can arrange anything from household goods, funeral costs, mobility aids or other general needs. Legal fees are not considered. We would advise clients to seek state and local benefits by signposting them to the relevant agencies.

- Develop a content calendar across all social platforms ensuring a constant supply of relevant content (1 post per week on LinkedIn, Facebook & Instagram – initially)
- Collate content for, prepare and publish the monthly volunteer newsletter through MailChimp
- Identify and engage with key social influencers to create beneficial relationships and strong networks and grow the ADC brand
- Perform social listening across all social platforms by monitoring and responding to relevant brand mentions and identifying opportunities for engaging in related topics/discussions
- Define social media KPIs, measure and optimize social media performance metrics, and develop enhanced reporting
- Develop and implement E2E fundraising campaigns

- 3+ years of experience in social and content management
- Experience using MailChimp or similar software

We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community since 1885. Our clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like the Falklands or Afghanistan. We’d love the general public to understand what we do and how they can help us.
There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas who support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families. Some branches are divided into smaller divisions to ensure the best local service delivery. Each branch has a team of volunteer caseworkers, support volunteers, executive roles, and fundraisers.

When would you be needed and where would you be based?
The essential part of the role is visiting clients, so you will need access to a vehicle or another way to travel to meet clients at home or in a care home setting. As part of your local branch, you might have access to an office, but you can complete the administration part of the role from home as long as you have access to IT equipment and the internet.
What would you be doing?

What training and support would you receive?
- Role specific training to prepare you for your voluntary role – confidentiality and boundaries, personal safety, caseworker training, and caseworker IT system training. The caseworker training takes 3 days and a further half a day for the other training.

- Access to a range additional e-learning courses as well as local opportunities for your personal and professional development.

Our Branch provides lifelong support to anyone who has ever served, in the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force and their dependants. We also give support to those who has been in the Merchant Navy, Seafarers, Fishermen and their dependants, and British Airways staff past and present. Our main role is seeking welfare benevolent grants on behalf of clients who reside in the 26 counties in the Republic of Ireland. They can arrange anything from household goods, funeral costs, mobility aids or other general needs. Legal fees are not considered. We would advise clients to seek state and local benefits by signposting them to the relevant agencies.

This role is vital to the work of FareShare, ensuring that the food in our warehouse is correctly sorted, labelled and organised into orders placed by our charities and community groups.

Set up in 1974 to support local communities and charities, primarily in West Berkshire, we became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation in 2014. We continue to match local people to local need, with our comprehensive volunteer recruitment service, our Handybus, voluntary car and Shopmobility schemes, and our general advice and bespoke support for local voluntary and charity groups.
Our income in 2023 was £270k, matched by almost-similar spending, so we’re not a large organisation, with our finances managed day-to-day by our Finance Officer and CEO.
The role and what we are looking for in a new Treasurer
As we celebrate our 50th year of voluntary success, we’ve recruited other new trustees and are now looking for a Treasurer to take over from our longstanding Treasurer, who is retiring after 17 years’ service.
Our Board includes people with experience and skills in governing our charity and responding to the needs of local people and local organisations. We expect our Treasurer to have empathy with our cause and our beneficiaries, awareness of the needs in West Berkshire, as well as provide strategic overview and guidance to our Board on the charity's financial standing and future planning.
Although we’d welcome your financial qualification, that’s not a requirement, as our finances aren’t complex. An understanding of how charity finance works would be beneficial of course, with the ability to communicate financial information clearly, especially to other trustees. Support from our CEO and Finance Officer will always be available, as they will be dealing with the day-to-day finances.
It would be great if you have prior experience of charity trusteeship, but that’s not absolutely essential; we can provide and access training focused on trustee duties and responsibilities. Full induction to our organisation will be provided, plus specialist support for you as a new trustee. You may find membership of the Honorary Treasurer’s Forum of benefit.
We are a charity not a business, but we apply business principles to governing our organisation. We welcome fresh expertise and experience from a variety of backgrounds to our charity, as we want to expand the diversity, in all meanings of the word, of our Board to reflect all our communities.
The focus of a trustee role is strategic, and trustees will not be expected to get involved in the organisation’s operations on a day-to-day basis; however, regular contact and liaison with other trustees, and our CEO and Finance Officer is expected.

We are looking for a Program Coordinator for our Scouts Program based in Ioannina, for a minimum commitment of 6 months.
In this role, you’ll be coordinating the daily planning and delivery of activities for young refugees in two refugee camps: Katsikas and Agia Eleni.
The program consists of English language classes, educational workshops and excursions outside of the camp. The program engages around 50 children at each site, between the ages of 8 and 17, the majority of whom are from Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria.
For this role:
Initially, you will work closely with the outgoing Program Coordinator to learn how the program functions. This may last a few weeks and may include preparing and delivering sessions in line with your skills, supporting teachers, and helping organise weekend excursions. What is a Service Committee Chair?
There are SSAFA committees on many military bases in the UK and overseas. Each one has a Chairperson to oversee all aspects of the committee. In recognition of their service to the Nation we aim to provide financial, practical and emotional support when it’s needed most. To do this we need volunteers who can represent SSAFA on the base and beyond, ensure that everyone knows about SSAFA services and keep things running smoothly behind the scenes.
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
This role is about leadership, networking, coordination, and administration. Many volunteers can carry out this role from home and from their place of work.
The role would suit someone looking to offer a regular time commitment. You would need to organise and attend a minimum of four meetings each year. The Chair is an Office Bearer and in addition to voting rights, holds the casting vote.
What would you be doing?
• Providing support to all SSAFA Service Committee volunteers
• Holding regular committee meetings, at least four per year
• Ensuring that all requests for grants are reviewed by the committee in line with the committee’s Terms of Reference
• Working with the Community Volunteer Coordinator to oversee all SSAFA community volunteering, ensuring beneficiaries get support that is effective and timely
• Monitoring volunteer numbers against the demand for support and recruiting new volunteers as needed
• Building positive relationships with the senior management team on the base and the local SSAFA branch working in the wider community
• Providing reports and information to the local SSAFA branch and to SSAFA’s Central Office
• Overseeing an annual plan and fundraising programme to meet the locally identified needs
• Being a positive ambassador for SSAFA remembering that anyone you meet could be a potential client, volunteer, or fundraiser
• Working with Central Office staff to ensure all volunteers complete all mandatory tasks in line with the training and vetting requirements of their role.
• Volunteering within the standards and values of SSAFA including adhering to our policies such as the volunteering policy and data protection policy

• An induction to SSAFA specifically designed for Chairs and Chairmen within SSAFA’s Volunteer Network
• Online training modules on safeguarding and GDPR, so you are up to date on how to keep beneficiaries, their families and information safe
• Access to a range of e-learning courses as well as local opportunities to keep your training up to date.
• Support from a Regional Operations Support Manager (per region)
• Support from SSAFA’s Welfare team, Volunteer Development team and Volunteer Experience team
• Reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses
What are we looking for?
• Friendly and approachable people of any age (18+) with some experience of coordinating people
• Good written and spoken English
• Ability to engage the senior managers on site representing SSAFA and the needs of clients
• Respectful and non-judgemental approach with beneficiaries, their family, other agencies represented on base and SSAFA colleagues
• Ability to send and receive emails – you will receive your own SSAFA email address which you will be required to use when exercising your role
• Volunteer management skills
• Ability to keep within the boundaries of the role e.g. prompt reporting of safeguarding concerns in line with SSAFA policies
• Reliability
• Practice confidentiality and data protection in line with SSAFA policies
• Willingness and means to travel to meetings or events as required
• Ability to provide two referees: former employers or other people that know you well (other than relatives)
