Purpose of the post
Reporting to the Head of External Affairs, this is a pivotal role that is integral to demonstrating the value of health data research. You will work hand-in-hand with the Communications team and the HDR UK research community to tell the compelling story of data in health research and showcase the impact of HDR UK research programmes.
You will help deliver the institute’s communications strategy, working with colleagues to manage a range of tools and channels, including media relations, digital communications, social media, email, publications and events, to reach audiences across academia, NHS, industry, charities, as well as patients and the public.

Communications at Health Data Research UK
Communications and External Affairs is a key enabler in supporting HDR UK’s mission. Our aim is to unite our audiences in the benefit of transforming the secure use of the UK’s health data in research to improve people’s lives.
Main responsibilities for the role
- Implement HDR UK’s communication strategy with a specific focus on communicating scientific and research impact.
- Horizon scan for opportunities to share research impact that demonstrates the value of health data research and the role of HDR UK in this sector.
- Lead, motivate and line manage the Content and Communication Officer, supporting their development in their role.
- Build and maintain networks with researchers across the UK involved with HDR UK research programmes, working with them to identify stories and create accessible content for our target audiences.
- Establish effective relationships and work in partnership with communication, policy and programmme teams across the institute and partners.
- Working with Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement colleagues, ensure our work across communications is shaped by patients and the public as needed.
- Work with the Director of Communications and External Affairs, project manage a branding project for HDR UK with an external agency
- Develop and deliver a new Impact Report for the institute to be launched at a stakeholder event in January
- Manage media relations at HDR UK to gain maximum positive coverage for the institute, manage reputational risk and respond effectively to media interest.
- Research, write and create engaging scientific content in the form of news stories, press releases, features, case studies, videos and podcasts.
- Provide strategic communications support and advice for senior colleagues within Health Data Research UK
- Maintain media and communications contact lists in our media monitoring system and provide updates on the latest news and media coverage.
- Commission external suppliers to support delivery of Health Data Research UK’s science communications and manage these relationships.
- Ensure projects are delivered within set budgets.
- Ensure all communication materials produced for Health Data Research UK adhere to the brand guidelines, helping to ensure the reputation of Health Data Research UK and its partners are maintained.

What you’ll do
As an Area Manager, your role is to increase our partner numbers and support engagement with our existing schools and colleges, helping them to make the most of the Unifrog platform. Excellent customer service is at the heart of what we do, and you will make sure that all interactions with Unifrog are positive and successful.
You will cover your own area of the country - the Midlands and East Anglia region - with occasional travel to these locations (on average 1-2 days per week).
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Meeting with potential partners at schools and colleges (in person and via video call). You’ll demonstrate the Unifrog platform, convey our mission to level the playing field for students and look to secure their ongoing subscription.
- Supporting schools with constructing their long and short-term careers strategy, then reporting on the impact of the Unifrog platform each academic year.
- Maintaining outstanding relationships with existing partner schools, which includes delivering remote and in-person training to ensure they make the most of the platform.
- Developing an excellent knowledge of Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) within the UK and consulting with schools on how to support their students.
- Proactively working to foster a sense of community amongst our Unifrog partners and always thinking about how we can promote the sharing and embedding of Unifrog best practice across our partner schools.
- Achieving sky-high resubscription rates.
- Working collaboratively with Unifrog Account Managers to devise strategies for success with schools and colleges.

Purpose of the post
Working within the Legal, Trust and Ethics team, the PPIE Manager will play a crucial role in advancing HDR UK’s mission to build trust and confidence in health data research among patients, public, practitioners, and other key stakeholders. Central to this mission is the active involvement of patients and the public in shaping our work and decision-making processes, ensuring that their voices are integral to our efforts.
The successful candidate will support HDR UK’s Public Advisory Board and coordinate their collaboration with different teams across the Institute. In addition, they will support other advisory groups essential to delivering our PPIE strategy. They will also be willing to support activities and events led by PPIE colleagues and feel comfortable leading multiple projects at a pace in a complex organisation and interested in trialling, developing, and delivering innovative approaches to PPIE.
Reporting to the Head of Public Involvement and Engagement, the PPIE Manager will be instrumental in building partnerships with patients, public communities, and practitioners. They will also support HDR UK’s key initiatives, including our newly established Brain Health partnership involving organisations such as the UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI), Dementia Platform UK (DPUK), and the Alzheimer’s Disease Data Initiative (ADDI).

Carers Manchester South (CMS) brings together three organisations: Manchester Carers Forum, Lifted and Together Dementia Support. The work of the team is focussed specifically on South Manchester. The Team works closely as part of Carers Manchester to raise awareness and identification of carers, and to identify what support is needed for carers that isn’t already there. Forming one team made up of partner organisations allows members of the team to each bring their own skills, experience, knowledge and passion to work together to put the quality of life of carers at the heart of what they do. The postholder would be directly employed by Manchester Carers Forum and would lead this team.

ABOUT THE ROLE
In early 2025, Smart Works will open a new centre in the city centre of Bristol. Opening a twelfth centre will make Smart Works services accessible and available to more unemployed women ahead of their job interviews.
Smart Works is looking to appoint an experienced leader who is passionate about our work to lead the opening of the new centre.
The successful candidate will work closely with the central Smart Works Charity team to establish the centre in Bristol. In practice the role will involve identifying a suitable location for the centre, recruiting a skilled volunteer team, establishing a supporter base in Bristol and building partnerships with local referral organisations, corporate partners and funders.
Once in post, the Head of Bristol will appoint three additional staff members, building a founding team who will ensure the newest Smart Works centre is set-up for success. A founding Board of Trustees will also be appointed to provide local insight, expertise and support.
Throughout, the Head of Bristol will work closely with the Smart Works Charity Head of Programmes and experienced central team. There is an established blueprint for opening a new centre that will guide the process, with central support covering Finance, People & HR, Communications, Fundraising, Wardrobe and Operations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Appointing and managing a staff team of four and a volunteer community of over 50, ensuring all team members thrive in their roles and continue to develop their skills.
Supporting each direct report with project deliverables and identifying continuous improvement opportunities in our ways of working. This work will sit across fundraising, service delivery and outreach work with referral partner organisations.
Overseeing the establishment, set-up and smooth running of the Bristol centre. Acting as the Designated Safeguarding Officer for the Bristol centre, following established training, guidance and procedures.
Acting as the day-to-day contact for the Smart Works Charity finance team, overseeing day-to-day spend and budgeting, contributing to reforecasting exercises and ensuring established processes are followed.
Delivering financial activities to target, maintaining an up to date database with relevant income tracking and pipeline information to facilitate regular financial reporting to the Board of Trustees and timely process reconciliation with the Board Treasurer and Group Finance team.
Championing the Smart Works service within Bristol, including supporting the team to raise awareness of the charity and increase the supporter community through social media campaigns and in-person events throughout the year.

SafeLives has an unparalleled track record of using evidence and research to effect national change, with research and analysis being fundamental to helping SafeLives achieve its strategy. This information is used to set our policy messages, define our strategy, design our services and evidence the impact of the work we have done.
In April 2021, the Domestic Abuse Act received Royal Assent. The Act introduces a new civil Domestic Abuse Protection Notice (DAPN) to provide immediate protection following a domestic abuse incident and a new civil Domestic Abuse Protection Order (DAPO) to provide flexible, longer-term protection for victims. DAPOs can impose both prohibitions and positive requirements on perpetrators. Positive requirements can be in the form of interventions aimed at reducing and managing risk, meeting the needs of an individual (for the factors that are not the causation of abuse but impact on risk, e.g. mental ill health and substance misuse) and behaviour change interventions.
The Drive Partnership has been commissioned by the Home Office to design a triage model that will assess individuals for the suitability of these interventions; this triage model will be rolled out in the pilot sites, which are going live in May 2024, and will be tested and evaluated in order to prepare for national roll out in 2026.

About the Role
We are looking for a technologist to help us in the next phase of scaling our web platform and supporting the communities we serve. To date our tech support has all come through an external team, and now we are excited to add an in-house role with significant support from our experienced (part-time) CTO and an external team.
You will work across a range of technologies on a variety of problems, which may include working with the team to triage urgent bugs; making improvements in our testing setup and CI/CD pipeline; understanding and investigating our data; supporting with IT issues; and more.
This is a flexible role in a growing charity, with the opportunity to build and deploy solutions from the ground up. As well as our CTO, the former lead engineer will be on hand to answer questions and support (0.2FTE), and the team developing features has experience working on this app. We will look to expand this team over time as the charity continues to grow.

Areas of Responsibility
Monitoring and resolving issues

Performing root cause analysis of production errors and resolving technical issues (with support from tech lead and development team)

Communicating with the school partnership team and content development team to understand requirements and keep them updated on issue progress

Designing procedures for system troubleshooting and maintenance
-
Building tools to reduce occurrence of errors and improve customer experience

Providing level 2/3 technical support
Platform engineering, pipelines and deployment

Setting up CI/CD pipelines for our products

Building and maintaining development tools and infrastructure

Deploying updates and fixes to production environments

Working on ways to automate and improve development and release processes

Building and deploying automation and monitoring solutions

Ensuring that systems are safe and secure against cybersecurity threats
Support with data

Liaising with the wider team to understand data needs

Writing and reviewing SQL queries, including to extract anonymised data or report statistics

Creating data dashboards (potentially with volunteer support)

Making sure our Postgres database is operating efficiently and reviewing updates

Support with laptop setup

Support with issues with a range of cloud services

Working with users to ensure the tools are meeting user needs and proposing solutions
About You
Our ideal candidate is a problem solver who has capability across a range of technology areas, and can drive the range of problems that might arise in running a web platform to solutions. You may have developed and deployed a web application, whether professionally or as a side project, and been responsible for its end-to-end maintenance. You may have managed the IT for an organisation, whether professionally or in a voluntary capacity, including managing integrations and solving users’ problems.
We will ask you for examples of the following skills and experience:

Experience in continuous integration and continuous delivery practices

Working knowledge of databases and SQL

Familiarity with version control software (Git preferred)
