We are seeking an experienced HR professional to lead an HR function within the UK’s leading fostering charity and membership organisation.

Position: Head of HR

Location: Homebased OR in any of four offices (London, Belfast, Cardiff, Glasgow). Occasional travel to London will be required.

Salary: £47,000-£52,000 + London Weighting if eligible

Contract: Permanent, full time - 35 hours per week

What you’ll be doing:

As Head of HR you will own the HR function, collaborating with the Senior Leadership Team and people managers across the organisation (c.100-120 employees) to develop and embed policies and processes and support the team to be the best organisation that they can be.

Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nursing charity that is there for the whole family. Our specialist nurses, known as Admiral Nurses, provide free, expert advice, support and understanding to help families care for their loved one. Purpose of the job/About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Finance team at Dementia UK, playing a key role in the administration, maintenance, reporting, and compliance of funds and fund accounting.

As an Accountant, you will be responsible for carrying out monthly balance sheet reconciliations, leading on all trading subsidiary matters, and ensuring charity tax compliance, including VAT and Corporation Tax, across the organisation. You will also support the year-end process, including the preparation of the Annual Report and Accounts as well as assisting with the external audit.

In addition, you will contribute to the ongoing enhancement of financial governance by improving internal controls, configuring financial systems, and ensuring compliance with legal, VAT, and tax regulations. You will also produce accurate financial information to support decision-making, processing pump prime payments, setting up new suppliers, and managing purchase orders. Collaboration with the Finance Manager and Finance Business Partners will be key to ensuring accurate fund allocations for salaries and maintaining up-to-date reports for effective monitoring.

To succeed in this role, you will be either part-qualified in a UK professional accounting qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA) or part qualified by experience, with 2-3 years of proven financial accounting experience. You will have a strong understanding of charity accounting, particularly the Charity Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP), and demonstrate expertise in managing donor/restricted funds, including reporting for major donors, trusts, and foundations. Additionally, you will bring proven experience in enhancing internal controls and improving system processes.

Personal Specification: 

Essential skills, knowledge and qualities: 

1. Experience of working in a customer, member or client facing role

3. Experience of using a CRM management system, preferably Salesforce
4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to positively communicate with a wide range of people in a professional setting, with demonstrable ability to communicate effectively in challenging situations

6. The ability to analyse data and produce reports
7. The ability to take a proactive approach to independent working, managing your own workstreams effectively, and the confidence to take responsibility for tasks and decisions

Desirable skills, experience, and qualities:

• Interest and/or understanding of the immigration law sector in the UK

About the role 

As a Housing First Coach you will deliver high quality person-centred support, using psychologically and trauma informed approaches, in line with Housing First principles. You will take a bold approach to establishing open and trusting relationships with people who have had long histories of homelessness or in temporary/insecure accommodation, enabling them to access and sustain accommodation and empower them to exercise choice and control over their lives. The team is multi-disciplinary – Coaches, Peer Support Worker, Clinical Psychologist – which allows us to collaboratively formulate innovative approaches to support. The team operates across London, providing numerous opportunities to build impactful partnerships and contribute towards systems change.   

About you 

To be successful in this role you will be a self-starter, flexible and have experience of working collaboratively as part of a team and with internal and external partners.  You may have a background in housing/homelessness support, adult safeguarding, drug or alcohol recovery services or mental health and have significant experience of working within a multidisciplinary setting with the ability to create strong professional relationships and creative solutions.  You will have experience of working with people who have faced severe and multiple exclusion and who may have ‘complex needs’; with an understanding of the needs of people who have been homeless for long periods of time. You will be willing and able to provide practical assistance with moving into and maintaining a home – including direct help where necessary with tasks such as shopping, budgeting, cooking, and cleaning.  You will also have a knowledge of Housing First and Housing Led approaches and the ability to work within a psychologically informed approach.

About the role 

Demand for support for people experiencing homelessness is changing and we have a vacancy in our front facing Engagement and Assessment service.  

This service provides first line support to people experiencing homelessness, assessing their needs, identifying support, and working with other staff and services to address their homelessness.  

We need someone to join this team as a receptionist to increase our capacity to respond to new and existing members of Crisis.  

As the first point of contact, our Engagement and Assessment service greets individuals who are experiencing homelessness or facing a risk of homelessness. You will be working in a fast paced and often challenging environment, explaining and guiding people through the Crisis service offer, and signposting to other local support services. You will need to create a welcoming and encouraging environment, to ensure that people seeking support feel understood and respected.  

No two days are the same, and you will be greeting people, helping signpost to appropriate services, and responding to telephone and email enquires in a positive and supportive way. This is a key role as you will be part of a members journey out of homelessness, right from their first presentation.  

About you 

As a receptionist you have a real opportunity to demonstrate your compassion and empathy for people experiencing homelessness as our first point of contact at Crisis.  

Sometimes visitors are distressed by their situation and this role would suit someone who is both resilient and compassionate.  

You will need to have strong communication skills, be able to listen and respond even when people are demonstrating their distress through their language and behaviour. This is where you will demonstrate confidence in your ability to assertively challenge inappropriate behaviour and de-escalate conflict.  

You will develop professional relationships with our members who regularly attend and become part of their progression out of the most difficult of personal circumstances. Our current team tell us how rewarding and motivating this can be.  

You will need to be able to help manage the reception area, spot potential concerns and safety issues and respond to these to ensure that reception is a safe space for new and existing members, and other colleagues.  

You will have experience of working with vulnerable people, balancing this together with an excellent level of customer service, IT skills and an ability to accurately record sensitive information.  

You will be interested in evolving your skills and playing an active role as we continue to develop our Engagement and Assessment service further.

About this exciting opportunity

Embedded within the local authority, our successful candidate will carry out one-to-one mentoring work with a caseload of clients (aged 11-25 years) and produce support and risk management plans based on assessments, ensuring that they are equipped to think critically, assess risk, and make better life choices.

We will also count on you to develop and maintain professional relationships with external agencies to arrange bookings and promote the SOS+ service, and to work closely with the pastoral and safeguarding leads, upskilling partners, attending partnership meetings and contributing expertise around lived experience and local  knowledge.  Assisting with providing monitoring information and the evaluation of the project and maintaining accurate records of your mentoring work, session work and data collection are both key duties, as is representing the organisation and working collaboratively with external organisations, partners and corporate supporters. 

What we are looking for

• Personal experience of the criminal justice system, or lived experience of the issues facing the client group (i.e. involved in gangs or knife crime)
• Experience of assessing needs and thereafter providing support and advice to children at risk of harm, whilst advocating their interests to professionals
• Experience working as part of a multi-agency team
• A Level 3 qualification in relevant field or willingness to work towards one
• Knowledge of the issues facing this client group – gangs, knife crime, social exclusion and exploitation
• First-class interpersonal, relationship-building and communication skills, both verbal and written.

Reporting to: Area Manager

Location of work: Flexible. This post holder will be based at home but daily travel to schools or other establishments within your allocated local area will be required including some early morning breakfast visits. The role will require irregular travel throughout the UK with minimal overnight stays. A full driver’s licence and use of a vehicle is required.

Contract type:  4 days / 28 hours per week term time only, although flexible hours may be considered. This role will involve early morning breakfast visits to schools or other establishments which you will need to be able to attend. The role may require occasional evening and weekend work

BACKGROUND 

Magic Breakfast is a registered charity providing healthy breakfasts to children and young people in the UK who arrive at school too hungry to learn, and expert support to their schools. Over 200,000 children and young people are on roll at Primary, Secondary, ASL / Special Educational Needs Schools and Pupil Referral Units that the charity works with, in disadvantaged areas of Scotland and England. Providing breakfast ensures that children start their school day with the energy and nutrition they need to be able to make the most of their morning lessons.  Magic Breakfast also undertakes research, and campaigns for long-term solutions to end hunger as a barrier to learning.  

This is an exciting time at Magic Breakfast, as we have expanded our team to meet the challenge of ending morning hunger for now, and for good.

JOB PURPOSE 

Magic Breakfast’s mission is to end child morning hunger in the UK now and for good. The Service Delivery team is responsible for ensuring the delivery of our breakfast provision. As Engagement Partner, you will work with relevant partners (schools, local authorities, parents, parent councils) to ensure that breakfast provision is optimized, encouraging reach and providing education on relevant topics.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Pipeline development and cultivation:   

• To develop a relationship with the supported schools in their respective area, to enable, preserve, embed, enhance and extend stigma and barrier free breakfast pron.

• To educating and engage with the wider school community, including teachers, parents and children and young people on the importance of breakfast and implications of hunger as a barrier learning through various means including assemblies, staff meetings, online events and regional events throughout the academic year.

• To engage with the wider community to advocate for the importance of breakfast, the work that we are doing in existing schools and to support our campaigning and advocacy strategy and plans.

• To develop brand awareness in schools and local communities in line with our marketing strategy

• To support the recruitment of new schools with launching new breakfast provisions, adapting to the requirements of the school and children and young people, and advising on best practise

• To support any media requests as directed through the Policy & Engagement team

• To capture and report on “storytelling” to enable the organisation to utilise qualitative data to support external communication

• To explore, share and deliver on new engagement ideas across the department and organisation

• To enable, support and feedback on new ways of working, trials and innovations

Role description

This is an exciting opportunity for a passionate and creative project manager to join our Wales team. This role will be responsible for managing and delivering the North Wales Doorstep Sport project.

The project will implement an innovative place-based approach to increasing participation and engagement levels of young people living in low-income, underserved communities in sport and physical activity, focusing on 6 local communities across the region. 

The post holder will work in partnership with regional housing associations to develop and deliver an operational plan for the project, provisionally focusing on communities in Caernarfon, Bangor, Connah’s Quay, Llandudno, Llanrwst and Holyhead.

The role is integral to supporting and developing our placed based work in Wales and growing our ability to support a thriving network of Locally Trusted Organisations across the region. The role includes the activation and promotion of wider StreetGames support packages and interventions across North Wales that address wider issues, for example holiday hunger, community safety, mental health, youth voice and workforce development.

The ability to communicate in Welsh is desirable for this post holder, however, training and support to learn will be provided for the right candidate.

Job Title: Finance Officer
Reporting to: HQ Finance Manager
Hours: 37.5 per week

Street Child is one of the world's fastest-growing children's charities. In less than 15 years we have made a material impact on the lives of nearly a million children - but the desire, potential and need to go so much further, and to reach millions more children in need of safety and a quality education, is what motivates us every day. Strong finance functions underpin everything that we want to achieve as an organisation and this role is a vital part of this.

Role Purpose:

This role is a key member of the busy HQ finance function. The role is primarily focused on HQ finances and will also work with the colleagues across our global finance team. The role offers the chance to work across a number of finance functions, including: management accounting, supporting year end audit, Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable and working on some of the subsidiary charities; and so it provides a great opportunity to experience the full breadth of finance work in a charity across all functions in a varied and interesting role.

It is essential that the applicant can juggle the complexities of a busy role with has varied work priorities. Key stakeholders are the HQ Finance Manager, Finance Director and the HQ based fundraising team. The role works alongside the Finance Assistant and plays a role in oversight and coaching of this role. Street Child is implementing a new CRM system and this role will feed into the development of new processes and procedures and use both the CRM and finance system and ensure full reconciliation and data trail between the two systems.

Key Responsibilities:

1) (40%) Deliver all functions related to Accounts Receivable and CRM:

• Ensure that all income from a variety of different sources is correctly and accurately recorded in the finance system and CRM (which is under development) on a weekly basis.
• Supporting with work on accounts receivable including accessing, downloading and saving in a systematic manner reports from donor portals, bank account and other sources.
• Working with colleagues in Fundraising to analyse and code income reports in Excel and uploading it to the Finance system on a timely basis, at least weekly. Following up on how to code any income which is not allocated to a source.
• Working closely with colleagues in Fundraising to ensure prompt collection of outstanding balances from customers, and sending out monthly debtor balance statements.
• Raising donor invoices and requests for payments, and issuing donor receipts.
• Income and customer account reconciliations and revaluations.
• Any other responsibilities relating to Accounts Receivable.

2) (40%) Month end reporting and reconciliation and subsidiary accounts:

• Complete all balance sheet reconciliations, including bank and petty cash reconciliations and submit for approval by HQ Finance Manager.
• Once CRM system is in place, undertake reconciliation processes between finance data and CRM data.
• Carry out monthly revaluations of bank accounts.
• Ensuring supporting information for transactions is correctly stored in electronic format on Teams such as bank statements, remittance advices, credit statements.
• Assist in preparation of internal reports, including working with Operations Department and Finance department to review their monthly reports.
• Take responsibility to deliver the management accounts of two subsidiary companies: Children in Crisis and HQ transactions of Africa Educational Trust.
• Compile information for Gift Aid returns.
• General support and assistance to the team including administrative duties and managing the office post.
• Other ad hoc support to the wider operations team as may be required.
• Audit: support with the year end audit and provision of supporting information to auditors.

3) (20%) Lead the Accounts Payable process:

• Whilst the Finance Assistant is responsible for all payments, the Finance Officer has a lead role in ensuring that all invoices are paid on time, in an efficient manner and that the finance system reflects the transactions within the correct accounting period and correctly coded in the system – including account code, cost centre, project code and donor code.
• Determine most efficient payment platform to process international payments, and ensure that recorded in the finance system at the correct conversion rate.
• Be a point of contact with the Foreign exchange agents to quickly resolve any questions.
• Work with the Finance Assistant to ensure accurate and timely recording of all approved supplier invoices, requisitions, staff expenses and other expenditure in the accounting system and that all supporting documentation for all transactions are uploaded.
• Ensuring that there are at least two payment runs a week and additional runs as required; overseeing the process to ensure that all invoices for payment are correctly approved by the budget holder, setting up payments on online banking platforms and sending out requests for payment approvals to payment authorisers and verifying that all payments are fully approved in the banking platforms by the deadline set. Providing cover to set up payments when the Finance Assistant is not available.
• Managing monthly staff credit card reconciliations and ensure that these are returned on time with all receipts and invoices and checking and reviewing classifications, with follow up as required.
• Carry out monthly Creditor account reconciliations ensuring that all balances are valid and backed up with appropriate supporting documentation.
• Fully deliver the set up all payroll payments in time for the monthly pay day. This involves ensuring correct amount and currency of payment (which may differ from the salary of the individual’s employment contract) and method of payment across all HQ staff.
• Any other responsibilities from time to time.

1. Leadership and Strategy

• As a member of the SLT, you’ll contribute to the charity’s organisational leadership and strategic development, you’ll:
• Lead the development and implementation of a people strategy that will enable Empire’s staff to flourish.
• Review and strengthen our practices related to people, including internal communications, CPD and onboarding.
• Support the transition of Empire from a founder led organisation to a founder inspired charity, including through the development of a Senior Leadership Team.

2. Culture and Wellbeing

• Work with colleagues to define the Empire workplace culture, recognising the charity’s heritage, values, and future plans.
• Develop a behavioural competency framework aligned to Empire’s culture, beliefs, and strategic objectives. We have a working name of Empire DNA, but we’d like you to develop this.
• Lead on the development and implementation of practices that strengthen Empire’s culture and support people’s wellbeing at work. Work with our HR Consultant to make this practice into policy.
• Explore using an annual staff survey to evaluate and enhance culture and wellbeing.

3. Professional Development

• Provide leadership, training and support to Empire’s managers.
• Introduce a standard of line management, and support staff to develop skills and a culture to achieve this
• Train and support managers to provide clear, timely feedback.
• Develop and implement Empire’s approach to Continuous Professional Development (CPD), ensuring the charity offers training and support that enhance people’s skills and career growth.

Knowledge and skills

• Strategic thinker, able to identify an organisation’s goals and align people and culture strategies to achieve them.
• Strong leadership skills, with an ability to lead and ‘own’ a critical function for the charity.
• Exceptional communication skills, verbal and written.

• High level of emotional intelligence, able to empathise and understand the needs of employees.

• Ability to work independently and autonomously. Able to engage critically in Empire’s work and the issues it tackles.

Experience

• Experience of making a significant contribution to an organisation’s people and culture strategy.
• Experience of developing and implementing people related strategies that achieve an organisation’s objectives.
• You do not need “HR” experience, but a light understanding of employment practices would be useful.
