Job description

Volunteer English teachers

We are currently recruiting experienced volunteer English teachers or tutors to support young people with their learning in Leicester city centre.

Every Monday we run an education group for newly arrived young asylum seekers who are waiting for a place at school or college. We provide beginner level English and support them to become familiar with the UK classroom environment. We are looking for volunteers to support this session, either from 11:00-12:30 in the morning or 1:30-3:30 in the afternoons.

On Thursdays we operate an education drop-in, where young refugees can come to receive homework support for their studies at school or college, or get extra tutoring if they are studying for exams or other qualifications. We are looking for volunteers to provide English tutoring 1:1 or in small groups, at beginner to GCSE level. The drop-in takes place on Thursday evenings from 5-7pm.

Teaching/tutoring volunteers may be involved in:

  • Working one-to-one or in small groups with young people
  • Planning a learning session to reinforce skills taught at college
  • Developing and maintaining After18’s learning resources
  • Recording and evaluating progress

Teaching/tutoring person specifications:

  • Previous teaching experience essential
  • Awareness of, or willingness to familiarise with, exam syllabus and exam requirements
  • Spoken and written fluency in English
  • Compassion and sensitivity to asylum-seeking young people
  • Ability to work within After18’s policies and procedures
  • Able to commit for the academic year
  • Commitment to promoting and safeguarding the welfare of the children and young people they come into contact with

After18 is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of the children and young people we work with. All staff and volunteers are required to undertake an enhanced criminal record check before joining us.
