Muslim Aid is a UK faith-based international development organisation that provides support to communities around the world affected by disasters, conflict, or endemic poverty without regard to their social, religious, or ethnic background. 

Established in 1985, Muslim Aid has facilitated the engagement of the British Muslim and non-Muslim community in support of its work in a variety of ways. Over the years, its humanitarian work has included responses to major crises around the world including, famine in East Africa, earthquakes and flooding in Pakistan and Bangladesh as well as conflicts in Syria and Yemen. 

We place strong emphasis on long-term development projects that build the capacity of local people to help themselves. In addition to the 5 country offices worldwide we also work with multiple partner offices focusing on sustainable Development Programmes and providing humanitarian relief during times of crisis.

Summary of the role:

Summary of Role

The Senior Data Protection Officer (DPO) will play a critical role in overseeing Muslim Aid’s data protection strategy and its implementation to ensure compliance with data protection regulations. This position involves safeguarding the personal data of beneficiaries, employees, donors, and partners, and integrating data protection principles into all aspects of the organisation’s operations.

This is a permanent, part-time position, requiring three days a week.

About the Role:

  1. Monitor and ensure compliance with all applicable data protection laws and regulations, including GDPR, and other relevant legislation in the countries where INGO operates.
  2. Develop, update, and maintain the organisation’s data protection policies, procedures, and guidelines to reflect current legal requirements and best practices.
  3. Develop and implement a comprehensive data protection strategy that aligns with the organisation’s mission and operational needs, ensuring data protection is embedded in all processes and activities.
  4. Develop and deliver comprehensive training programmes on data protection principles and specific legal requirements, including SAR handling, to educate all relevant stakeholders.
  5. Lead the organisation’s response to data breaches, including investigation, mitigation, notification, and reporting to relevant authorities and stakeholders.
  6. Act as the primary point of contact for individuals regarding their personal data. This includes responding to queries about data handling practices etc.

About You:

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in law, Information Security, IT, or a related field.
  2. Proven experience in data protection, privacy law, or a related field, preferably within an INGO or non-profit environment.
  3. In-depth knowledge of global data protection laws and practices, including GDPR, and an understanding of the legal and regulatory environments in the countries where INGO operates.
  4. Strong understanding of information technology and data management practices, with the ability to work effectively with ICT professionals to implement technical data protection measures.
  5. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex information to a diverse audience and influence behaviour at all levels of the organisation.
  6. High level of integrity and professional ethics, with a commitment to upholding the organisation’s values and mission.
