Last year, 136,000 young people approached their council for help as they were homeless or at risk of being homeless. Even more alarming is that figure represents an increase of 58% from six years ago. Youth homelessness costs the UK economy an estimated £8.5bn, largely due to unemployment, and so the challenge can feel huge. But we already have the resources to solve it within the built environment sector. And that is where LandAid comes in.
We use our links to the UK’s property industry, harnessing its members’ direct capital, assets and skills to help tackle youth homelessness by awarding grants and investing in frontline charities, providing financial support, and brokering free advice and expertise to increase the impact of their support.
The Chief Financial and Operating Officer is an important new role for us, created to ensure we achieve our ambitions over the coming years by focusing on delivering better quality of management information, insights and analysis to the Board and leadership to inform decision making. You will also look to invest in our internal operations by driving continuous improvement and exploring emergent technologies that offer us the ability to deliver greater real-time insights to and efficiencies for our teams. In addition, you will review our risk and governance frameworks by working actively with our Board sub-committees.
Beyond finance, you will oversee our outsourced HR and IT functions, ensuring we receive high-quality and cost-effective support and have robust systems and policies in place. You will also continue our work to become an employer of choice, building on our achievements today which have seen us identified as one of the UK’s ‘100 Best Small Companies to Work For’, and shortlisted as one of the ‘Top 30 Charities to Work For’.

Knowledge of the built environment and/or capital investment is advantageous, as is an understanding of the models of social investment. Operating at the heart of Volunteer Centre Kensington & Chelsea, this role is about leading a team and implementing and maintaining systems that enable us to support more people to change their lives, and the lives of those around them, for the better. It is also an opportunity for a committed person to build the capabilities needed for effective leadership in a supportive environment.
You will take responsibility for our volunteering brokerage and development work (along with our one-off and easy-access volunteering activities) and the staff who deliver it, and for enabling our target audiences to understand and value our work, supported by our Communications Officer. You will take responsibility for the quality of our HR, Data Protection, Health & Safety, and Safeguarding practice, managing our Finance and Operations Coordinator to administer those areas day to day. You'll work from our offices the majority of the time, and we have a flexible working policy that facilitates working from home and other options, too.
Working alongside our Chief Executive will provide you with opportunities to build expertise beyond your core responsibilities, as your time and interests allow - in monitoring, evaluation & learning, policy and practice, fundraising, financial planning and strategic management.
This role is ideal for someone with a track-record in service management who is keen to develop their capabilities as a leader. A successful candidate will need to show that they can:
- demonstrate expertise in the theory and practice of volunteering
- lead a team and oversee multiple work-streams efficiently and effectively
- get results via one-to-one work with volunteers, organisations and colleagues
- help the Volunteer Centre have a greater impact by analysing and improving our performance in areas like HR, Data Protection, Health & Safety, and Safeguarding
We want you to contribute to nurturing our positive culture - to be a place that both our team and our clients want to be, that develops and mobilises people’s capabilities in the context of relationships of care and respect, for their benefit and that of everyone in the borough.
As Head of Volunteering and Operations you will combine hands-on support with guidance and advice to your team; an eye for detail with the ability to see the bigger picture. Comfortable working with volunteers and the organisations that host them, you will develop relationships with new client groups, enable current relationships to deepen and grow, improve systems and processes, and contribute to ensuring that VCKC continues to be recognised for its excellence by a wide range of audiences.
If this sounds like you - we would love to hear from you!

Change lives in a life-changing career
When a child or young person is diagnosed with cancer, their whole world can feel like it’s falling apart. Independence is taken and confidence is stolen. Stability no longer exists. The future suddenly feels uncertain.
The impact of cancer on young lives is more than medical. That’s why we exist. Our specialist social workers help children and young people with cancer and their families navigate the emotional and practical impact of cancer. We remove barriers, solve problems and prioritise wellbeing. And we stop at nothing to make sure they get the right care and support at the right time.
We challenge the systems and policies that surround children and young people, we highlight gaps and campaign for change. Because we know what a better future could look like. And we know what we need to do to make that future a reality. We need to push harder, reach further and work smarter. And we need the right people on our team to help us get there. People like you.
About the role
We’re looking for a motivated, communicative, and knowledgeable Public Affairs Officer to join our Policy and Influencing Team, to help us achieve the positive change children and young people with cancer across the UK, and their families, need in the health system. This means amplifying the voices of young cancer patients and delivering evidence-based campaigns that make change happen.
The Public Affairs Officer is responsible for supporting the Policy and Influencing Team with public affairs expertise to deliver the key components of our influencing work in England and UK-Wide (Westminster). You will help us influence the system for children and young people with cancer and their families, so we can change experiences of having cancer and ensure children and young people’s voices are heard.
This role is subject to a criminal record check. In the event of a successful application a basic criminal record check will be completed.
This role is a hybrid role, with frequent in-person presence in London required. As a London-based role requiring frequent travel within London, the advertised salary is reflective of our London pay scale.
