Fundraising Trustee Volunteer Roles

We are currently seeking to recruit two to three more volunteer Trustees.

Citizens Advice Cornwall is an independent charity and a member of the national Citizens Advice service. We offer free, independent, confidential and impartial advice to individuals across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly on issues such as debt, welfare benefits, employment, housing, and consumer problems. We also research and campaign on a range of social and consumer issues. Our services are delivered by a team of highly-skilled and motivated volunteers and paid staff. As an organisation, we value diversity, promote equality and challenge discrimination wherever we find it.

The successful candidates will join our Trustee Board, which provides strategic direction and oversight to the charity. We’re looking for ambitious and forward-thinking people to help us deliver on our dual mission of advice and advocacy.

This position would suit someone taking their first steps to develop wider board level experience, and for those who might be new to governance. We welcome applications from all ages and backgrounds, so no matter what experience you have, we will provide full induction, onboarding and regular training for your Trustee role.

What we are looking for

As a small charity we have a committed and enthusiastic team of employees and volunteers on the ground who work to support our young people and their carers. As Roots looks to expand its work and programmes, we are seeking to enhance our board in order to embed a new strategic plan and provide support to the growing number of employees.

We are specifically interested in trustees who have experience in any of the following areas to strengthen our existing skills set.

• Finance, accounts and budgets 

• Campaigning 

• Change Management 

• Comms and Marketing

• Legislation in relation to the organisation's work and charitable status.

• Monitoring and evaluating performance

• Health and Safety 

We are particularly keen this time to recruit Trustees with relevant lived experience, such as care leavers and kinship carers.

We also encourage applications from young, disabled or Welsh speakers, and people that live in Swansea and the surrounding areas, as these groups are currently under represented on our Board. The ability to speak Welsh is desirable but not essential. 

We are also particularly interested in recruiting a Treasurer. As the organisation grows and receives more funding, it is important that we have a Trustee experienced in financial management, who can oversee the accounts and budgets as well as advising on the financial implications of the new strategic plan. 

Role on Trustee board: 

• To oversee the strategic development and growth of the charity in line with its aims and objectives.

• To support events and be an active and contributing member of the trustee board and its activities.

• To take the lead in agreed areas, working with sub groups that could include employees and feedback to the wider board. 

Commitment required: 

We meet as a Board every two months, usually on a Tuesday at 5pm for 2 hours. The Trustees will be provided with the relevant papers in advance of meetings, preparation and reading for the meeting usually takes about an hour. 

There is an expectation that Trustees are available for 80% of these meetings (ie 5 per year) and to undertake agreed tasks outside of these times. The monthly commitment is approximately 6 hours per month, including meetings and meeting preparation. 

The Trustees also meet twice a year in person at Roots, usually in the spring for half a day and autumn for a full day. 

We are seeking Trustees that will also be visible and engage in activities at certain times of the year, for example celebrating successes, supporting activities such as trips with young people and be public facing where agreed to promote the organisation. One Trustee per month is expected to visit Roots, for visibility and to help support the staff and young people.

Reimbursement / allowance entitlement.

Trustees will be entitled to mileage allowance and other reasonable expenses to attend meetings in person and take part in agreed activities. 

We will provide induction and ongoing training. Due to the nature of our work with young people, an enhanced DBS check is required for this role. 

Secretary/Trustee

Who we are:

We are a long-standing (33 years) local charity, based in Ashford, providing friendly advice, companionship and volunteering opportunities for anyone in our part of Kent who is socially isolated, lonely, or would welcome support with their mental health and wellbeing. We arrange 3 free drop-in sessions per week at Ashford Parish Rooms, at which our service users participate in a wide range of activities including crafts, singing and art therapy. We also offer food and beverages from our pop-up healthy eating café and dedicated door-to-door transport where required.

Due to an upcoming retirement we are now seeking a Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees. 

About the Role:

The Secretary will be responsible for the smooth and efficient running of meetings of the Trustee Board, providing assistance and support to the Chair. They will also be involved in monitoring compliance to the legal and regulatory requirements affecting the charity and its activities, and ensuring that the Trustees’ decisions are acted upon and that all decisions made by the Trustees are in accordance with the governing document, reflect the objects of the charity, and continue to provide public benefit. They will liaise with the Chair and the charity team to ensure that events such as the AGM and Trustee Board meeting are scheduled and administered, with accurate minutes taken and circulated and agreed action points implemented.

It is expected that all Trustees will be able to attend our Trustee meetings in Ashford, which are held at least once a quarter, as well as the AGM and ideally a small number of other functions eg fundraising events.

Skills & Experience:

Essential:

Good time management and keeping to deadlines

Good level of IT skills (email, Microsoft Word)

Ability to take minutes of meetings

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

Willingness to commit sufficient time to the Secretary role

Desirable:

Previous experience of working with/for a charity, or being a charity trustee or involved with the adult social care/health sector, would be an advantage but is by no means essential.

 Introduction

The Board of Trustees is responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of Telford and Wrekin CVS (TWCVS). Key roles include ensuring sound financial management; compliance with charity law and organisational risk management.

The Board is accountable to a variety of stakeholders, including funders, customers, members, partners, Charity Commission and Companies House.

Individual Trustees are expected to play an active role in the Board: attending meetings, acquainting themselves with papers and information sent out beforehand, contributing to discussions and decision-making.

There is no remuneration for Trustees. Reasonable out of pocket expenses will be paid in line with TWCVS’s agreed policy and practice

 Trustees are committed to developing and maintaining

· An understanding of and commitment to the vision, mission, objects and aims of TWCVS.

Pecan is seeking an accountant and Christian to join the Board of Trustees as Treasurer and Chair of the Finance committee. See person spec.

Pecan is a community development charity based in Peckham. We work with the local community to help people find a way through seemingly impossible barriers to a better future.

Over the past 30 years, we’ve seen thousands of clients flourish through our programs, including: ex-offenders and their families, refugees and asylum seekers, young people and the long-term unemployed. We see our service users as people who need supporting – not problems which need solving.

We advocate for those we work with, challenging inequality and injustice at a local and national level to provide hope and belief in a better a future for our community.

Board meetings are held on 10-12 occasions annually on a weeknight at 6.30pm.

Meetings of the Finance committee are held quarterly at a time agreed between trustees and management.

The Treasurer, along with the other finance committee members and senior management, guides the financial and business matters of the charity in line with good practice and in accordance with our governing documents and legal obligations. There are no executive responsibilities within Pecan and the Treasurer will not be an employee.

Main responsibilities and duties - in addition to the general responsibilities of a Trustee and undertaken with other members of the Finance sub-committee

 - To scrutinise and recommend budgets, accounts, financial policies, management accounts and financial statements to the board of Trustees after discussions with the Chief Executive, other senior staff, and other members of the Finance Committee, where applicable.

- To ensure that proper accounts and records are kept, ensuring financial resources are spent and invested in line with the charity’s policies, good governance mechanisms, and legal and regulatory requirements

- To ensure that Pecan has appropriate reserves and investment policies.

- Liaising where applicable with appropriate members of the core management team responsible for the financial and operational activities of the charity.

- Attending and contributing to the work of finance committee in line with its terms of reference and reporting back to the board of Trustees verbally and in writing.

- Liaising with the charity’s auditors where appropriate and monitoring and advising on the financial viability of the charity.

- Ensuring that specific financial and organisational controls and systems are in place and adhered to.

- Advising on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plans.

- Ensuring that sound financial management of the charity’s resources is maintained and that expenditure and investment are in line with the charity’s objects.

- Reviewing the financial aspects of the charity’s risk register.

About Bhubesi Pride Foundation

Bhubesi Pride Foundation, BPF, is a youth sport and supplementary education charity supporting communities in Africa, now focused on Malawi. Through non-contact rugby, netball and other sports, we help to empower young people, providing opportunities for education, leadership and community development.

Over the last 5+ years, and in the face of multi-faceted challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, BPF has made significant progress helping to develop several core programs in rural Lilongwe, involving boys and girls in youth sports and integrated life skills activities. To enable this, we’ve worked closely with BPF Malawi – the partner NGO we registered (in Lilongwe in 2017) – to assist with organisational strengthening, policy implementation, improved operational delivery, governance, strategy, data collection and impact assessments. Since early 2022, the NGO’s staffed team has increased from two to 11 (all Malawian), 50+ Malawian youth sports coaches have been trained and over 3,000 young people actively participate in locally-led programming. Alongside in-country stakeholders, we’ve facilitated the construction of a unique sports and education facility on a 7-acre site in rural Lilongwe, on land purchased by the NGO, which is being increasingly utilised by BPF Malawi. Alongside the NGO, we’ve expanded our reach, deepened our impact and we continue to champion sport as a vehicle for positive change.

Our experiences have taught us a lot of valuable lessons about the work we do and, crucially, about our duty to Malawian communities. Future goals include increasing our sustainability, improving governance practices and building long-term partnerships which allow BPF to make even more of an impact on the communities we serve. Strengthening the charity’s relationship with BPF Malawi is also a key focus for us over the next 5 years, enabling us all to fully understand, and respond to, Malawi’s core challenges, and paving a more sustainable road ahead.

Role overview

The Chair will lead BPF’s Board of Trustees, working closely with the Chief Executive to ensure the charity continues to deliver on its mission. This is a pivotal role at a strategically important time, for all connected to our work. You will therefore help BPF shape and refine its next strategy and ensure the Board contributes effectively by supporting the charity’s goals.

Key responsibilities

• Leadership: Provide leadership to the Board of Trustees, ensuring that the charity delivers on its mission and strategic objectives.
• Governance: Ensure strong governance practices are in place, including compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. Lead on setting high standards for the Board’s performance and engagement, and appoint new Trustees to bring additional value.
• Strategic planning: Work with the Chief Executive and Board to support the development and implementation of the charity’s next strategy (closely collaborating with, and supporting, BPF Malawi).
• Fundraising and partnerships: Play a key role in helping the charity build long-term partnerships and secure new funding for the charity’s future sustainability.
• Trustee development: Inspire, support and hold BPF’s Trustees accountable for their contributions, ensuring that the Board as a whole functions effectively.
• Advocacy: Act as an ambassador for BPF, raising awareness of our work and helping to grow our profile in the international development and business sectors.

Person specification

Essential:

• Collaborative and inclusive approach: A commitment to working collaboratively with the Board, CEO, staff/volunteers, key stakeholders (e.g. charity partners and BPF Malawi) to achieve shared goals; and an inclusive intent to see that marginalised and vulnerable youth, especially girls and young people with disabilities, are given fair and equal opportunities and rights.
• International development knowledge: Experience in international development, ideally in Africa, with an understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the sector.
• Accountability and high standards: A high level of personal integrity and a focus on holding others to the highest standards of governance, effectiveness and impact – embodying and promoting BPF’s core values.
• Governance expertise: Proven track record of good governance, including understanding the legal and financial responsibilities of a charity board, bringing an open approach to how governance practices can be strengthened.

Desirable:

• Third sector experience: Knowledge and/or experience of the charity sector, within sport for development, youth empowerment, education or international development.

3. Legal / Governance Trustee

We are seeking an expert with a legal or a governance experience, supporting the Board of Trustees meet Its statutory obligations.  The role involves oversight of major policies and processes in place to support the Charity.

4. Business Development Trustee

We are seeking an individual who can support the Board of Trustees with its mission to grow and sustain Guidepost Trust UK.  This is a critical role, responsibility will include developing long term partnerships and networking. 

5. Marketing Trustee

We are seeking a communication expert to advise the board and the Operational Leadership Team how we can further enhance our engagement and awareness to deliver its aims.  Our new Trustee will have strong background in a related field such as, brand development, marketing, advertising or PR.

6. Finance Trustee

We are seeking a finance expert to monitor the financial administration of the charity and report to the board of trustees at regular intervals on its state of financial health, in line with best practice, and in compliance with the governing document and legal requirements to provide the board with the confidence and knowledge to better make strategic decisions.
