The Bar Standards Board, the independent regulatory body for barristers in England and Wales, is seeking new lay and barrister members.
The Bar Standards Board (BSB) is the independent regulator for barristers and related specialised legal services businesses in England and Wales. We exercise the regulatory functions delegated to us by the Bar Council in line with the regulatory objectives laid down by the Legal Services Act 2007. The primary role of the Board is to ensure that we act in the public interest in accordance with those objectives. To that end, we set education and training requirements, establish and maintain professional standards, authorise organisations, and deal with questions of professional misconduct. We are governed by a Board of 11 members, made up of five practising barristers and six lay people, including the Chair.
We seek to appoint two lay Board members and one barrister Board member who will work with others on the Board to lead the organisation through a time of far reaching change in the legal services market and its regulation. Over the next ten years, barristers in England and Wales will continue to face major challenges. These include levels of public funding, changing consumer demands and expectations, and technological advances. The BSB must ensure that its regulation is risk-based, proportionate and agile in a changing legal services and regulatory landscape. It must also seek to promote equality and diversity at the Bar.
To meet these challenges the Bar Standards Board itself is reforming to become more proactive and consumer-focused in its approach to regulation and more efficient in its delivery of its regulatory functions.
We want the Bar to be as fully diverse as the society it serves, and we strive for diverse representation to be reflected across all areas of our organisation, including on our Board. The Board aims to have barrister members with a wide variety of practice backgrounds. We would particularly welcome applicants from the Circuits, from the Employed Bar and from the Young Bar.
For lay members, the Board is especially keen to appoint someone with experience of consumer advocacy, policy and/or engagement and someone with strong commercial expertise (ideally that would include change management in a commercial context as well as risk and finance at a strategic level).
You will have an awareness of the issues facing the justice system and the legal services market. You should be able to provide high-level strategic thinking, advice and leadership on the development and implementation of policy relating to the work of the BSB. You will also understand the role of non-executive directors in supporting and challenging the executive team to achieve the BSB’s objectives.

All candidates for the lay member roles must meet the definition of a “lay person” as defined by the Legal Services Act. They must never have been authorised to supply legal services by an approved regulator (e.g. as a barrister, solicitor, legal executive etc.) in England or Wales or have been a Scottish solicitor or advocate or a Northern Irish solicitor or barrister.
All candidates for the barrister member role must be a practising barrister ie must be authorised to practise by the Bar Standards Board.

We’re looking for a motivated finance professional to provide financial direction to our local advice charity and help us improve our long-term financial sustainability. The Treasurer is an officer of the Trustee Board and not a paid member of staff. The purpose of the role is to ensure that the charity’s finances and supporting financial control systems are robust and comply with relevant regulations.
The role works closely with the Chair of the Trustee Board, the Chief Executive and the volunteer Financial Accountant.
The Treasurer is responsible for chairing the Finance sub-committee, including preparing the agenda and arranging for the production of the minutes of each quarterly meeting,
Treasurer main duties and responsibilities
Financial accounts
· Every quarter, review entries on Xero made by volunteer Financial Accountant (
· Review quarterly management accounts prepared by volunteer Financial Accountant before submitting report to the Trustee Board
· Ensure that year-end accounts are prepared to in compliance with SORP (Statement of Recommended Practice) Accounting for Charities and submitted by the deadline to Charity Commission and Companies House, and make arrangements for them to be independently examined as required
Budgets and planning
· Prepare annual budget and obtain Trustee Board sign off each March
· Review and update forecast of annual outturn
Financial control and compliance
· Comply with the charity’s financial policies and procedures
·Liaise with the CEO to prepare costings for any funding bid applications
· Ensure capital expenditure authorisations and limits are followed, and prepare expenditure justifications where appropriate
· Ensure that money received is spend only on the purposes for which it was given and ensure that reports and accounts demonstrating this are submitted to funders
· Submit regular financial reports to national Citizens Advice as required, and meet all financial obligations of the Citizens Advice Membership scheme
Relationship with Trustee Board
· Provide financial advice as required to the Chair and Trustee Board
· Explain, guide and advise the Board on the key assumptions and financial implications of the budget, operational and strategic plans
· Keep the Board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities
· Ensure that all Board members have a clear understanding of the accounts presented at meetings
· Ensure that the organisation has an appropriate reserves policy and a realistic budget that meets the service’s needs
· Provide input to the risk register process
· Present accounts at the Annual General Meeting in an accessible way
· Chair the Finance sub-committee, preparing the agenda and arranging for the production of the minutes for each quarterly meeting
Treasury
· Act as key contact on the charity’s bank accounts
· Transfer money between savings bank accounts to optimise interest income
· Maximise the interest on savings by comparing available interest rates
· Review investments (in conjunction with other trustees)
· Review and update cheque signatory and electronic payment authorisation
· Authorise salaries and PAYE payments to HMRC
Other (annual)
· Review reserves policy
· Prepare salary review (in conjunction with Personnel Committee)
· Review office insurance policy
· Review Gift Aid claim prepared by volunteer Financial Accountant

We are seeking to appoint a Trustee Safeguarding Lead to provide strategic oversight and leadership for the organisation, particularly in the area of Safeguarding.
The purpose of your role is to work alongside the other trustees to ensure that the Association is working towards its charitable purposes, is complying with all applicable rules and laws, and is making best use of its resources to achieve its aims.
Whilst safeguarding is the responsibility of all trustees, as Trustee Safeguarding Lead, you will provide support to the CEO and the Operational Safeguarding Lead in their operational roles, promoting safeguarding within the organisation and our affiliated Nightlines, providing a strategic, advisory and governance role.

Trustees have legal responsibility for the Association’s management and administration. They are ultimately responsible for the Association’s work and are accountable to both the Association’s legal members and its regulators such as the Charity Commission for the good governance of the Association.
Trustees take considered and informed decisions in the best interests of the Association. Trustees are not expected to be experts on all areas of their work but are expected to seek guidance and support where necessary and to bring their own knowledge and experience to contribute to discussions.

Who we are
At Dementia Concern, our primary goal is to empower those living with dementia, here in their local community. With fifty staff and a turnover of £1.1 million, we are exclusively for the people of Ealing, from Southall over to Acton. Their rich diversity is reflected in our staff and clients.
Established in 1982, almost forty years on we are still committed to our central strategic goal to provide amazing person-centred care and support for people living with dementia.
The role
We’re looking to recruit:
Up to 3x Trustees from diverse backgrounds with experience or skills in: Safeguarding, Quality of Healthcare, Law, Health & Safety, Fundraising, Cybersecurity, HR and EDI.
and
1x Chair of the Board
(Trustees do not need to live in London, once they are able to attend two board meetings in person per year, usually held on Wednesdays at 6pm)
Over the last five years of our forty year history, Dementia Concern has been on a mission to reach every person in Ealing living with dementia. We are over halfway there. This Board recruitment campaign is a chance for new Trustees to help us drive forward the charity’s strategy 2024-27 and help us deepen our impact.
A couple of our Trustees will be coming to the end of their second (three year) term on the Board, so we’re seeking to recruit additional trustees and our next chair; our former Chair served from 2020 to 2024 leading the charity skillfully, including through the uncertainties of community healthcare in a pandemic.

Protection Approaches is looking for 1-2 trustees to support, challenge and inspire us at an exciting time of growth and possibility and to help deliver our ambitious strategic plan. We are particularly looking for outstanding guidance in the fields of finance, human resources, and/or charity law, but above all, we are looking for people who share our belief that the prevention of identity-based violence is a shared responsibility that stretches from governments to communities to individuals.
About Protection Approaches:
Founded in 2014, Protection Approaches is a fast-growing, dynamic, London-based charity that works locally, nationally, and internationally. We seek a world where everyone accepts and respects each other, regardless of identity. We want to change the way the world thinks about identity-based violence – and by so doing, change how we respond to and prevent it. From our local programmes in communities to challenge hate crime to our global efforts to confront mass atrocities and genocide, we believe that this mission is not only possible but probable, and are dedicated to doing the long-term, difficult work necessary to make it sustainable.
Specifically, we:
- Work on the local level towards community led change, collaborating with communities on tackling marginalisation, building resilience, and research.
- Work on the national level towards state level change, whether on domestic or foreign policy. Our atrocity-prevention programme has led efforts that have transformed the UK approach to crimes against humanity and genocide while our domestic Stronger Communities programme has opened up funding for community-led solutions.
- Work on the multilateral and global level to transform how identity-based violence is understood and responded to within our international system.
- Conduct training courses on identity-based violence, hate crime and atrocity prevention.
- Across all these areas, we undertake, commission, and coordinate research to ensure that the programmes we develop and implement are supported by evidence and in line with global best practices.

Due to the current make-up of our Trustee Board, we are not actively searching for candidates with skills, knowledge and experience related to the Student Union and HE sector and we would welcome candidates from other sectors or regions to apply.
