The Role of Trustee

The Trustee board is the principle governing body of CPRE London and is collectively responsible for the leadership and direction of the charity.

As a Trustee your role includes:

• Developing and overseeing implementation of our strategic plan to help us to deliver our vision.
• Offering independence, external perspective, skills and challenge
• Mentoring and supporting the staff and volunteers.

Although keen to appoint dedicated Trustees offering a breadth of skills who share our aims, the Trustee board have identified some areas where specific knowledge and experience would be welcomed to complement the existing team:

A.Knowledge of the planning system / planning law / planning organisation

B.Technical knowledge of ecology / horticulture / forestry 

C.Communications, including social media

D.Experience with an environmental organisation or charity.

To best represent London’s diverse community on our Boards of Trustees and ensure all residents benefit from our green space advocacy, we welcome applicants from all backgrounds. 

Commitment:

The Trustee board meets four times a year at our London office in Farringdon with meetings starting at 18.00 and generally finishing by 20.00. There may be ad hoc commitments in between the board meetings. In the autumn, the Trustees and staff attend a one-day off-site strategy meeting in the Greater London area. Trustees are also encouraged to attend the AGM.

All Trustees are appointed for a three term of office from election at the annual AGM and are eligible for re-election for a further one-year term with a maximum of six years’ service.

The Essex and Suffolk Rivers Trust is an environmental charity set up to protect, conserve and rehabilitate the rivers and estuaries of Essex and Suffolk. We are in an exciting time of growth and have been redefining our strategic plan up to 2030. We are looking for two new trustees to join us.

Our Trustees work together with our director to guide our organisation to achieve its vision to protect, conserve and rehabilitate the rivers and estuaries of Essex and Suffolk. These plans will be set in the context of a fast-moving land use and environmental policy arena. TRUSTEE - BRANCH SECRETARY 

RSPCA South West Somerset Branch

Overview of the Branch Secretary opportunity

As a Branch Secretary, you would be in an essential volunteer role as the principal communications trustee managing and maintaining the administrative affairs of our branch. Using your expertise and skills, you will be able to influence how we care for and prevent cruelty to animals and drive the implementation of key initiatives.

This role would require a time commitment of 1-4 hours per month.  This would include attending a committee meeting every 4-6 weeks in the evenings, usually lasting up to 2 hours and the annual general meeting.

We are happy to take applications from outside the branch catchment area, as long as you are able to join meetings by electronic means such as Zoom, and are willing to travel to in person meetings a couple of times a year.

The RSPCA South West Somerset Branch

The RSPCA South West Somerset Branch is one of the branches of the RSPCA, but we are also a separately registered charity looking after animals in our local area. Much of the animal welfare work of the RSPCA is carried out through local branches, which is run by volunteers who have the support of the National Society of the RSPCA.

The RSPCA South West Somerset Branch runs charity shops in Taunton, Wellington, Chard and Bridgwater.

Primary responsibilities of the Branch Secretary

• To act as the primary contact point for all branch communications with the national Society, the branch committee, and the branch membership.

• Arrange branch meetings, ensure accurate minutes are taken and distributed in accordance with branch rules.

• Ensure all branch committee decisions are implemented and actions completed.

• Arrange the branch AGM including the compilation and distribution of the annual report, nominations, and agenda in line with the strict timetable laid down in the branch rules.

• Arrange the timely dissemination of the contents of all correspondence and literature received by the branch, ensuring availability to all committee members, and reply to all branch correspondence where necessary.

• Order and distribute RSPCA stationery, leaflets, posters and other fundraising and promotional material.

• Liaise with the Branch support specialist (BSS) and group chief inspector and notify them of all branch meetings.

• Advise the BSS of all changes to branch facilities, services, and contact details.

• Maintain the branch membership list.

• Submit recommendations for national Society awards to the BSS, in accordance with the wishes of the committee.

Core Branch Trustee responsibilities

• Appreciate and support the aims and policies of the RSPCA.

• Work in conjunction with fellow trustees and branch officers and jointly act in making decisions for the best interest of the branch and the RSPCA.

• Work with national RSPCA staff to ensure that the branch meets all minimum animal welfare standards (MAWS).

• In conjunction with your fellow trustees and Branch Partnership Manager write, adopt, monitor, and review a development plan setting out the short and long term aims of your branch.

• Actively participate in branch committee meetings and to attend the branch annual general meeting and regional conference.

• Be aware of the outcome of regional board meetings and support regional initiatives.

• Actively promote and advertise the society in an ongoing programme to recruit new branch trustees and volunteers and welcome new members.

• In conjunction with your fellow trustees, ensure the proper management and control of all activities and decisions relating to any premises held or staff employed by the branch if applicable.

What we are looking for in a volunteer:

Above all, we are looking for someone who is committed to the RSPCA’s charitable objectives and shares our passion for animal welfare. 

Specific skills such as finance, fundraising, project management, business experience, awareness of employment and/or charity legislation can be useful, but not essential.

You will need to be able to work with people and have good interpersonal skills. You do not need to be an expert, although commitment, common sense, and the ability to be objective are vital.

Practical considerations

• Please also note that to become a Trustee, you will need to be aged 18 or over and a member of our branch for three months before you are eligible to be elected.

• Trustees must sign a Trustee Declaration of Willingness to Act to clarify that they are not disqualified from being a trustee and read the Charity Commission’s guidance for individuals on who cannot be a trustee or senior manager of a charity.

Charity Purpose

• Raise funds for research into the cause, prevention and management of dementia.
• Allocate funding to university research project meeting the highest academics standards.
• Raising awareness of dementia.

Objective

• Holds the Executive team and the Board to account to:
  - remain focussed solely on the BRACE stated purpose
  - remain compliant with all English and Welsh laws and the regulations of the Charity Commission.
• Support the Chief Executive in ensuring both the Board members and Executive team work closely together to achieve the agreed strategic objectives.
• Act (in partnership with the Chief Executive) as an ambassador and the public face of BRACE.

Charity Structure

• BRACE the charity has a sole Trustee “BRACE Trustee Limited”. All members of the Board are Directors of BRACE Trustee Limited and act as Trustees of BRACE. There are up to 15 directors of BRACE Trustee Limited who for reasons of clarity are called Trustees.
• The Chair and Trustees are usually appointed for a fixed term of 4 years which can be renewed once, enabling Trustees to serve for a maximum continuous term of 8 years.

Meetings

• Board meetings are held 4 times a year plus 1 awayday. Each meeting is +/- 4 hours.
• There are currently 3 sub-committees of the Board (Scientific Advisory Committee [SAC], Finance and HR). The 3 sub-committees meet no more than one month before the board meetings either in person or on Zoom. SAC reviews applications for grants and makes recommendations to the Board for approval.
• Board Meetings are generally held in person in the Bristol area, online or hybrid meetings are not encouraged but can be facilitated.

We are looking for a Treasurer to lead this charity’s board’s oversight of charitable funds, you will be pivotal in ensuring the organisation demonstrates excellent stewardship of resources and is financially sustainable for the future.

Position: Treasurer

Location: Remote or London-based office

About the Role

We are looking to appoint a Treasurer for this exciting organisation. This is a particularly exciting time to join us, as we put in place a new three-year strategy to bring greater clarity and focus to developing the organisation’s role.

We are looking for a Treasurer who will be a charity trustee (company director) and ensure that the public interest and charitable objectives run through all that we do. We will launch our three-year strategy in the Autumn of 2024 and the next step is to craft a clear and achievable delivery plan to sit alongside this strategy which will be accompanied by a medium-term financial plan.

Your background in financial leadership will be an ideal experience to chair the Finance, Risk and Audit Committee (FRAC) and provide support to our finance team.

Key responsibilities include:

· Meet with the Chief Executive and relevant staff to prepare for FRAC and board meetings and discuss other financial matters.

· Seek assurances that the financial resources of the organisation meet its present and future needs.

· Advise on the financial implications of the organisation’s strategic plans.

· Keep the board of trustees informed about its financial duties and responsibilities, including the organisation’s free reserves position and target.

· Oversee the preparation of budgets, management accounts and financial statements, and ensure processes are in place to ensure that the statutory accounts are disclosed in the form required by the Charity Commission and Companies House.

· Ensure that the accounts are externally audited and any recommendations from the auditors are implemented; as financial spokesperson, make a formal presentation of the accounts and audit report to the board of trustees and members, drawing their attention to important points in a coherent and easily understandable way; liaise with the auditors on specific issues such as the management letter and related board representations.

· In liaison with the communications team act as financial spokesperson and draft external briefings for the organisation.

· Ensure that processes are in place to ensure appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place, including an appropriate reserves policy.

About You

You will need to have the following skills and experience:

· An understanding of the wider talking therapies environment, regulatory frameworks, and professional associations.

· An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.

· A commitment to the organisation and its charitable objectives.

· Financial qualification (ACA / CIMA) or equivalent.

· Strategic and analytical financial experience.

· Board-level experience in the Public, Private or Third Sector.

· Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills with experience working in an influential role and the ability to explain financial information to a variety of audiences.

· Demonstrates good, independent judgement; can also act with impartiality, fairness and respect confidences.

Tanzania Development Trust (TDT) works in some of the poorest parts of Tanzania, helping people to lift themselves out of poverty by funding small projects that meet their essential needs.  

It sponsors 40-50 small rural development projects p.a. in Tanzania, mainly in the areas of clean water, girls' education and small income generating activities. It also has 3-4 larger, longer-term projects. Its primary function is fundraising, although it provides general project management and business advice where appropriate. 

Around half of its income comes from individual donors, and half from Trusts & Foundations. It helps villagers in Tanzania who lack the capacity and language skills to present their projects to international donors, conducting project appraisals and monitoring project outcomes on their behalf. The projects are implemented by the villagers themselves, or by small local contractors.

TDT is run entirely by volunteers (17 regular volunteers in the UK and 16 local representatives in Tanzania). It has no paid staff, premises or overheads, so 100% of all money raised goes directly to projects in Tanzania.

We are looking for additional Trustees who can help us to grow by identifying potential donors, increasing awareness of our activities, and strengthening our project selection and monitoring procedures.

We would like at least one of the new Trustees to help us with fund-raising by piloting more innovative and creative approaches. Experience of living or working in Tanzania is not essential, but to improve the Board’s racial diversity we would like at least one of the new Trustees to be of Tanzanian origin or have strong connections with East Africa.

The Trustees are all unpaid. Although their main job is the overall direction of the business, they can become involved in day-to-day operations if they so wish. We all work remotely, which helps us to engage with our local representatives in Tanzania in everything we do.

Note - this volunteer role will last 2 months initially, following 2 months of volunteering the incumbent may or may not be asked to stay on as a volunteer in this role. 

Youth Advantage UK are looking to recruit an Assistant Chief Operating Officer who is able to commit time and effort into providing continuity and consistency to the daily operations of the organization while maintaining operational success on a daily basis across the organization through practical strategic management support.

Key responsibilities:

• Be available regularly to support and guide management on complex or challenging matters 

• Support the line management of departmental heads and other management to ensure of operational success on a daily basis 

• To be involved in drafting and developing policy

• To work alongside the Chief Operating Officer to ensure of the smooth operations of the organization

• To be second or third in change of the daily operations of the organization 

Role requirements:

• To have over 2 years of experience at manager level or above

• To have previously had some responsibility for operations

• To have an understanding of HR, IT, Governance and Law

• To be able to provide strategic support

• To be able to use IT to an excellent standard 

• Good communication skills 

• Good literacy skills
