Family Thing Dance is a small but growing charity that provides inclusive dance classes for people with learning differences and diverse abilities. We are looking for Trustees to join our Board to offer governance and support to grow the charity.
The dance base is commercial dance and hip-hop. Family Thing's mission is to provide opportunities for empowerment, support and a sense of belonging using dance as a vehicle to reach these aims.
Family Thing is passionate about providing these dance opportunities for everyone. There are many reasons why. Mencap lists the main benefits of taking part in leisure activities as improving physical and mental health, personal social skills, self-worth and confidence, and social attitudes (Mencap, 2019). Yet despite these widely understood benefits, only 16.8% of people with a learning disability take part in a sport or physical activities at least once a week, compared with 39.9% of the general population (Sport England, 2018). Additionally, there is a great deal of evidence that inactivity is a major contributing factor of ill health in people with learning disabilities. Only 9% of participants in a 2016 review met the minimum recommended guidelines for physical activity (Dairo et al, 2016).
We know that organisations like Family Thing play a role in the well-being of people with learning disabilities by providing activities that promote good physical health as well as positive psychological and social stimulation, and offers a way to overcome situations such as loneliness and anxiety. We know that a positive impact of Family Thing is the increase in social engagement and improvements in physical and mental well-being for those who participate in our classes.
Activities: Family Thing offers free or subsidised, supportive, fun and creative dance classes to diverse groups of children, young people and adults. During each session, dancers are invited to create their own ‘dance hero persona’, and have opportunities to express themselves as individuals with the support of the group. There is a focus on strengthening their sense of community through the concept of “supporting your crew”. As defined by those who attend the groups, the overall aim is to create a “big family” that’ll dance altogether basically!
What are we looking for?
At this particular time we are keen to find people with a financial services background and someone who may be willing to take on the role of Treasurer in due course and/or someone with marketing skills, including digital marketing.
Experience
- Experience of the dance community (desirable but not essential)
- An understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion and a desire to support those with learning differences and diverse abilities
- Leadership experience (desirable but not essential)
- Experience of delivering strategic organisational change (desirable but not essential)
It is not necessary to have previous board experience as training and support can be given
Skills
- A commitment to the Family Thing
- A willingness to devote half a day a month to this work and be able to attend the bi-monthly board meetings
- Good, independent judgement
- An ability to think creatively
- A willingness to speak your mind and communicate well
- An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship
- An ability to work effectively as a member of a team
- An understanding of safeguarding practices
- Some experience of charity finance and fundraising is desirable, but not essential (and candidates do not need prior experience as a charity trustee)
- Knowledge and experience of current and fundraising activities relevant to voluntary and community organisations (desirable but not essential)
Attitude
- Honest, open and trustworthy with an understanding of the duty of candour
- Respectful of confidentiality procedures
Special Conditions
The post requires the ability to attend online meetings and occasional face to face events. All expenses will be reimbursed.

The role:
Protection Approaches is looking for a new chair of trustees to lead, challenge, and inspire us at an exciting time of growth and possibility. We are looking for a proven leader with previous board experience, who understands how to lead established non-profits through transition. We need a strategic thinker who is able to make difficult decisions but who is also open minded, able to listen, and able to find consensus. Somebody who has the ability to communicate effectively with people from different backgrounds and is able to create an inclusive environment in meetings and in the charity where all are heard. Our chair will have an understanding of the work that Protection Approaches is engaged in and share our belief that the prevention of identity-based violence as a shared responsibility that stretches through governments to communities to individuals.
About Protection Approaches:
Founded in 2014, Protection Approaches is a fast-growing, dynamic, London-based charity that works locally, nationally, and internationally. We seek a world where everyone accepts and respects each other, regardless of identity. We want to change the way the world thinks about identity-based violence – and by so doing, change how we respond to and prevent it. From our local programmes in communities to challenge hate crime to our global efforts to confront mass atrocities and genocide, we believe that this mission is not only possible but probable, and are dedicated to doing the long-term, difficult work necessary to make it sustainable.
Specifically, we:
- Work on the local level towards community led change, collaborating with communities on tackling marginalisation, building resilience, and research.

Solace is a Domestic Abuse Charity, this year celebrating 50 years of providing services to women and children. We are at an exciting time in our development with a new Executive Team. We are seeking new Trustees to contribute and define our role and maximise our impact.
Those using our services often have multiple and complex needs relating to their health and wellbeing, often experiencing multiple traumas in their lives. We are unique in our offer, offering a range of services for women and children experiencing domestic abuse and sexual violence.

This is an exciting opportunity to help lead Big Leaf Foundation in the next phase of its development, as we transition our self-employed contractors to employee contracts and explore new multi-year core funding opportunities to build greater sustainability in our work. We are looking for someone with direct experience in financial management and/or charity finance and fundraising to fill this role. Ideally you will have experience of moving people onto employee contracts. You will use your skills and knowledge to make a lasting difference to the lives of displaced young people in Surrey.
In addition to the general responsibilities of a trustee, duties of the treasurer include:
- Overseeing, approving and presenting budgets, accounts and financial statements.
- Being assured that the financial resources of the organisation meet its present and future needs.
- Ensuring that the charity has an appropriate reserves policy.
- Preparing and presenting financial reports to the board.
- Ensuring that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place.
- Liaising with any paid staff and volunteers about financial matters.
- Advising on the financial implications of the organisation’s strategic plans.
- Ensuring that the charity has an appropriate ethical funding policy.
- Ensuring that there is no conflict between any funding sources and the aims and objects of the charity.
- Ensuring that the accounts are prepared and disclosed in the form required by funders and the relevant statutory bodies, for example the Charity Commission.
- Ensuring that the accounts are scrutinised in the manner required (independent examination or audit) and any recommendations are implemented.
- Keeping the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities.
- Contributing to the fundraising strategy of the organisation.
- Ensuring the accounts are presented in a coherent and easily understandable way in our annual review.
- Sitting on appraisal, recruitment and disciplinary panels as required.
In addition, with other trustees to hold the charity “in trust” for current and future beneficiaries by:
- Ensuring that the charity has a clear vision, mission and strategic direction and is focused on achieving these.
- Being responsible for the performance of the charity and for its “corporate” behaviour; ensuring that the charity complies with all legal and regulatory requirements.
- Acting as guardians of the charity’s assets, both tangible and intangible, taking all due care over their security, deployment and proper application.
- Ensuring that the charity’s governance is of the highest possible standard.
