Who we are:
We are a long-standing (33 years) local charity, based in Ashford, providing friendly advice, companionship and volunteering opportunities for anyone in our part of Kent who is socially isolated, lonely, or would welcome support with their mental health and wellbeing. We arrange 3 free drop-in sessions per week at Ashford Parish Rooms, at which our service users participate in a wide range of activities including crafts, singing and art therapy. We also offer food and beverages from our pop-up healthy eating café and dedicated door-to-door transport where required.
Due to an upcoming retirement we are now seeking a Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees.
About the Role:
The Secretary will be responsible for the smooth and efficient running of meetings of the Trustee Board, providing assistance and support to the Chair. They will also be involved in monitoring compliance to the legal and regulatory requirements affecting the charity and its activities, and ensuring that the Trustees’ decisions are acted upon and that all decisions made by the Trustees are in accordance with the governing document, reflect the objects of the charity, and continue to provide public benefit. They will liaise with the Chair and the charity team to ensure that events such as the AGM and Trustee Board meeting are scheduled and administered, with accurate minutes taken and circulated and agreed action points implemented.
It is expected that all Trustees will be able to attend our Trustee meetings in Ashford, which are held at least once a quarter, as well as the AGM and ideally a small number of other functions eg fundraising events.
Skills & Experience:

Person Specification

· Previous governance experience in the not for profit or commercial sector is welcome but not compulsory.

positively with our board and staff teams to achieve the very best outcomes for bereaved
children.
· All Trustees are appointed for an initial term of two years and are eligible to re-stand for a
subsequent term. Members normally serve for two terms to ensure a balance of
continuity and refresh.
· The Board of Trustees normally meets four times a year and in addition, Trustees are
encouraged to take on responsibility and actively participate in sub-committees, attend
events and support the staff teams as appropriate.

About us
Age UK East London (AUKEL) is a local independent charity, which is part of the national Age UK network. We work across Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Newham to deliver services which support older people to live healthier, happier and more fulfilled lives.
Our work
Each year we support around 20,000 older East Londoners by providing flexible practical and emotional support in homes, hospitals and in the community.
Our boroughs have the country’s highest pensioner poverty in the country, further exacerbated by the current cost of living crisis.
How we help

We tackle poverty
Each year our advice service supports over 2,000 older people to claim £3.2million in welfare benefits, grants and relief entitlements. During the cost of living crisis we distributed £42,000 worth of emergency vouchers for food, helping older people ensure there was food in the fridge.

We alleviate loneliness
According to a national model, Tower Hamlets has the highest rates of loneliness in London and in England. Our East End Friends initiative teams housebound older people who’d like a bit more company with a volunteer to visit them at home. 92% of older people said they felt less isolated and lonely and 100% of volunteers would recommend the scheme.

We improve health.
Many older people in our boroughs have very poor health. For example, at age 65, women can expect just six more years of good health, which is the lowest in London and almost the lowest in England. This reduces their quality of life and can make it harder to remain independent. As well as increasing income and addressing loneliness (both determinants of health) we offer yoga, walking, and chair-based exercise groups at our community centre in Bow. 87% of participants said they are more independent as a result.

We increase independence.
Many older people live alone and struggle to manage around the home. Our home from hospital service supports 3,000 older people to return to a safe and warm home. Just 6% are readmitted to hospital within 28 days compared to 15.3% in areas where there aren’t these services.
The Team
We have an established and talented Senior Management Team, a committed staff team and an extraordinary group of volunteers. Fifteen months ago the board recruited a new Chief Executive. She is ambitious for the charity, comes with a great track-record of charity leadership, and has worked hard with trustees to develop our new organisational strategy.
Role Requirements
We are looking for someone to be our Trustee Safeguarding Lead, and to contribute to the strategic development of our service delivery offer. We are therefore looking for someone with experience in Safeguarding and who has experience of overseeing significant service delivery (NHS, local authority or large third sector organisation).
You must want to improve the lives of older people across East London and be committed to equity, diversity and inclusion and understand the impact disadvantage and discrimination has on the life chances of our population. You will be curious, collaborative and ambitious and able to commit to an average of one-to two days a quarter (most meetings are in the evenings).
We would really like our board of trustees to look more like the community we serve. We would particularly encourage you to apply if you are an older person and/or you are a person of the global majority.

Context of the safeguarding trustee role
As an organisation we have a safeguarding responsibility to all clients and staff members.
The Charity Commission, our regulator, is clear that safeguarding is the responsibility of all Trustees and expects organisations interfacing with vulnerable people to appoint a Trustee Safeguarding Lead (TSL) to hold accountability at Board level for safeguarding within the organisation. The TSL has high level oversight of an operational safeguarding agenda that is managed on a day-to-day basis by the Safeguarding Lead (SL).
Information and Support for the Role
If appointed to the role of TSL you will be expected to engage as a critical friend (rather than operationally) and will triage any safeguarding issues brought directly to you.
You will be supported by the Chair of Trustees (who is currently the interim TSL), and/or if required an adviser, and will receive training appropriate to the role as required.
You will attend meetings throughout the year, both physical and virtual, including full Board meetings, Service Development Committee meetings and at least one review meeting with the organisation’s Safeguarding Lead.

Time commitment
Trustees will be required to complete an induction to the organisation and the Board. This will include site visits and meetings with the CEO, Senior Management Team, Chair and Board members.
The Board meets quarterly on Wednesdays from 6.00 – 8.00pm in East London.
In addition to the full Board meetings, the Finance Committee meets quarterly on Thursdays from 6.00 – 8.00pm in East London, the People Committee meets quarterly on Mondays from 6.00-7.30pm online, and the Service Development Committee meets quarterly online (regular days/times tbc). The Safeguarding trustee will be expected to attend the Service Development Committee.
Board members may be asked to commit additional time to support staff recruitment, review tenders and share expertise.
The agenda and papers for each meeting are usually emailed to Trustees a week in advance

Purpose of the role
The Board is responsible for the governance of the organisation, supporting the Chief Executive to ensure things run smoothly and effectively You will be supporting our 75 members of staff and part of our 90+ strong volunteer team. You will also have the opportunity to learn about how to tackle the challenges that our beneficiaries face, and how to deliver appropriate co-produced services that enrich older people’s lives and enhance the whole community of East London.

Been There is a small (but growing!) charity in the form of an app that connects people aged 18 and over with a vetted and trained mentor to help with any body image issues they may be experiencing. About the role:
If you are an experienced fundraiser, we need your help! Been There’s Board of Trustees share ultimate responsibility for governing the charity and directing how it is managed and run. As a member of the Board, you will help set the strategic aims, objectives and direction of the charity. Esteem works with young adults aged 14 - 26 to build lasting self-Esteem and stronger communities through group activities and 1-2-1 support.
Esteem creates spaces where everyone matters.
Esteem works with 200 young adults annually across all of Sussex who face barriers to achieving their life goals. We have a base in Shoreham and offer a variety of different opportunities, including social drop-in sessions, mentoring, wellbeing sessions, volunteering and counselling. We have a dedicated staff team with various backgrounds and a commitment to championing the views of young adults throughout the organisation.
This is an exciting opportunity to volunteer for a charity that is passionate about giving young adults the chance to develop their skills and confidence, both for their own benefit and for that of society as a whole. Esteem works with young adults to run Wellbeing, Social, Mentoring and Volunteering opportunities, with a youth-led and asset-based approach.
This voluntary role of Trustee & Secretary will include duties such as organising and minuting board meetings and some administrative duties to support the board. As well as the normal duties of a trustee (see The Essential Trustee Duties) The main aim is for the Trustee Secretary to support the Chair and the CO in ensuring the smooth functioning of the board of trustees. The Esteem Secretary will be expected to contribute around 6 hours per month to the organisation, including board meetings, which run for two hours every two months, from 6-8pm at The Old School House, Shoreham. A minimum commitment of two years would be preferable. This post requires some flexibility due to the nature of Esteem being a growing organisation.

Smart Works is a dynamic, high profile and fast-growing UK charity that dresses, coaches and empowers unemployed women for success at their job interview. After visiting Smart Works, 63% of clients secure a job within a month, gaining financial independence and transforming their lives.
The Smart Works service is delivered in 11 centres across the UK. Over the past ten years, Smart Works has helped over 35,000 women. In April 2022, Smart Works launched a new Three-Year Plan that will see the charity double the number of women helped annually from 5,000 to 10,000 women a year. To achieve this, we will grow our existing centres and open new centres in areas of need. We are well on the way to achieving our goals.
About This Role
An opportunity for a young person, with little or no previous Board experience, is now available to join our Group Board as a Young Person Trustee. Smart Works is led by a Group Board of passionate and dedicated Trustees, as well as the Trustees of six local Boards across the country, who are responsible for the governance and strategic direction of Smart Works. The position has been created in the interests of reflecting our own client base (data tells us that young women aged 16-24 are the most challenged when it comes to finding employment), as well as our responsibility to train the next generation of Trustees for our sector.

This role is about leadership, coordination, and administration. As part of your local branch, you might have access to an office, but many volunteers are based at home. - Ensuring the financial integrity of the Branch, including the appointment of Treasurers and a local fundraising programme to meet branch running costs.

- Monitoring volunteer numbers against the demand for support and working with other volunteers, regional and central office staff to attract and recruit new volunteers as required.
- Ensuring that all volunteers are recruited, inducted, supported, and managed in line with SSAFA policies, such as the Volunteering Policy, Volunteer Code of Conduct, Data Protection Policy, and Safeguarding Policy.

- Overseeing an appropriate programme of awareness raising so that potential clients, volunteers, and supporters know how to contact the branch.

The remit of this role may change over the next 12-18 months depending on the outcome of a trial currently being undertaken.

Evolve Counselling is a long-established charitable social enterprise, providing low cost, affordable or funded mental health counselling to adults in Cambridgeshire and surrounding counties. Our professional counselling community is made up of 50 – 60 qualified self-employed practitioners, working part-time to deliver talking therapies both online and in person.
We deliver around 500 counselling sessions per month to a broad range of individuals, many of whom would not otherwise be able to access therapeutic support. Evolve also provides supervision, reflective practice, critical incident support, and mental health awareness and related training to organisations and businesses large and small.
We are in the early stages of developing ambitious growth and innovation programmes, so this is a perhaps the most interesting time to be part of Evolve since we started in the 1970s. Opportunities for new Trustees to make their mark are considerable.
What We’re Looking For:
We are searching for an experienced HR specialist who can support our board, committees, and the CEO as we move through our next strategic stage of consolidation, then growth. Although long-established and successful, Evolve is reshaping itself and your HR expertise will be instrumental in positioning our charity to successfully meet the ever-growing demands and opportunities for supporting good mental health in our communities. Please note, a background in counselling is NOT a prerequisite for this role. Training will be available in general charity governance and in specific areas such as charity finance.
Your skills and knowledge, whether gained in the charity or commercial worlds, in a corporate HR Department, or a specialist consultancy, will help us to plan and “do the right thing” for our small staff and our self-employed counsellors, as we grow.

Winterbourne Medieval Barn is looking to recruit a Trustee with specific responsibility for overseeing the activities of the Events and Publicity Committee.
Immersed in over 600 years of history and heritage, Winterbourne Medieval Barn is based in a conservation area north of Bristol.
Major building works were completed in 2020 with support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and many other generous funders and donors to revitalise the whole Barn complex into a community heritage site promoting the knowledge of medieval history, its architecture, agricultural landscape and people.
As a multi-purpose venue, we host a range of activities for the local community including family activities, music and theatre performances, craft workshops, a monthly lecture series, and our flagship annual community events the Medieval Fayre and Orchard Harvest Day.
The private hire of the Barn and its facilities are available all year round and managed separately to the Trust events by the Venue Manager. The Barn and seminar rooms can be hired for weddings, celebration events, film shoots, and meetings.
Day to day managenent of events is carried out by two part time staff covering events and volunteer management.
Specific Role
To Chair meetings of the Trust’s Events and Publicity Committee and ensure effective decisions are made and responsibilities for actions are carried out.

The Smart Works service is delivered in London, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Newcastle, Reading and Leeds. Over the past ten years, Smart Works has helped over 35,000 women. It is our mission that any woman who needs our service should be able to find her way to a Smart Works centre.
In April 2022, Smart Works launched a new Three-Year Plan that will see the charity double the number of women helped annually from 5,000 to 10,000 women a year. To achieve this, we will grow our existing centres and open new centres in areas of need.
Smart Works Newcastle operating as a licensee of Smart Works Charity, is led by a Board of passionate and dedicated trustees, who are responsible for the managing the service in the north east. This covers the legal aspects of governance – however don’t worry we don’t expect you to have experience of this you’d be trained and supported. About the role
A fantastic opportunity has arisen to join the Smart Works Newcastle Board of Trustees as a Shadow Trustee, someone who can gain experience from the current board in an advisory role. This is great progression into an official trustee role. (A Trustee is a legal term for anyone in a position of trust or responsibility for the benefit of others.)
The Shadow Trustee will support in raising the profile of the Smart Works Newcastle service with the aim of helping younger clients aged 16-25 access the service, advocating for and being the voice of young people, helping shape the service to appeal to the younger demographic offering insight and advice. You really need to be able to put yourself in the shoes of a younger person and give that perspective.
This will enable us to continue to deliver our core service and increase the number of women we can support into work by dressing and coaching women for interview and job success.
This is a brilliant development opportunity for someone with the aspiration and potential to become an advocate for young people in the Northeast.
The time commitment for this voluntary, unpaid role is an average of equivalent of around two days per month, with more time given at busy periods of the year, we are flexible to fit around other commitments. There will be a requirement to attend board meetings four times per year (they are usually 3 hours) and share ideas with the staff team, join board meetings, take part in discussions and inform decision-making. There may also be some mini projects which may or may not include sitting on a working group from time to time. We also run brilliant events around fashion, support, coaching and sales which you can get involved in.
You won’t be thrown in at the deep end and you’d be given support and coaching by the experienced Trustees.

General Duties of a Smart Works Trustee
- Work with the Chair of the Board of Trustees to ensure the centre is well-run and managed effectively.
- Provide insights, suggest ideas, encourage scrutiny, and challenge traditional ways of thinking.
- Provide support to help decide on the plans and strategic direction of the Centre.
- Advocate for the Centre, raising its profile and the awareness of the Smart Works service for young clients in the north east.
- Build strong working relationships with the Chair, trustees, staff, volunteers and supporters.
- Work in a small team and use your interpersonal and communication skills to support anyone.

Personal Specification
The successful applicant is not required to have any experience just the willingness to support our Smart Works mission. It is a fantastic opportunity to learn from and be mentored by the current board who will support and nurture them. The successful applicant will need to be enthusiastic and able to communicate and share their ideas effectively.
They will be a voice for young people in the service. They should be able to advise us from a young person's perspective on things like clothing offer, socials and outreach.
As this is a voluntary, unpaid role it requires a self-starting and proactive approach with the capacity and time to challenge, engage and contribute to the work of the Board in a positive manner.

One In Four is looking for a new treasurer. We are a charity providing specialist support for survivors of sexual abuse, domestic abuse or violence in childhood or as adults.
Who we are
One in Four is one of the UK’s leading counselling support charities, with over 24 years’ experience of specialising in the long-term recovery support for adults and children who have a lived experience and survived sexual abuse and violence. We provide professional training for those working with survivors, advocacy and education of the public in the nature of sexual abuse and its effect on those who have been subject to it.
The role
Your role as treasurer will be to
– Monitor the financial standing of the charity and report to the Board regarding cash-flow forecasting, income streams, out-going expenses and the overarching strategic management of the organisation’s financial resources.
– Oversee the charity’s financial risk-management process and report financial health to the Board of Trustees at regular intervals.
– Act as a counter signatory for on-line payments and applications to funders, and ensure that annual accounts are submitted to all relevant regulators in a timely fashion.
– Liaise with external auditors on financial issues and ensure that the organisation’s finances are responsibly managed and invested for the betterment of the organisation’s work and for the beneficiaries it serves.
Qualities of a Treasurer
Essential
- Qualified accountant with demonstrated commercial awareness and knowledge.
- Knowledge of charity SORP and impending changes.
- Competent use of IT skills.
- Proven ability to communicate and explain financial information to members of the Board and other stakeholders.
- Analytical and evaluation skills, demonstrating good judgement.
- Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.
- Good communication and leadership skills
Desirable
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience of charity fundraising and finance practices.
- Dedicated to the organisation’s cause and objectives and willing to act as the charity’s ambassador to external bodies, charities and companies.
- Skills and experience in one or more areas of non-executive governance and management, e.g. strategic planning, business management, financial/accountancy, understanding of HR issues, experience of Trusts or other grant-giving bodies, particularly fundraising and legal knowledge.
