Overview:
Following the successful application of a National Lottery award, we are seeking two dedicated and compassionate Peer Support Group Development Officers to set up and sustain local peer support groups for people living with and affected by prostate cancer. These roles focus on building on our established networks to expand peer support in defined areas, facilitating group formation, and enhancing service delivery through strategic outreach and resource development.
This role offers a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on the lives of individuals living with and affected by prostate cancer, providing crucial support through community-based initiatives. Key Responsibilities:
- Group formation and support: Oversee the setup and operation of 10-12 self-sustaining and independent peer support groups within your assigned region across the lifetime of the three-year project. Ensure smooth delivery, monitoring, and evaluation of group activities. Support existing group leaders and organisers to reach more people living with and affected by prostate cancer with tools and resources.
- Volunteer Coordination: Recruit, train, and support volunteer Support Group Leaders. Assist in the co-production of training materials and resources, aimed at creating self-sustainable groups.
- Community Engagement: Conduct outreach to map existing support services and facilitate the integration of these services with the peer support groups. Host local engagement events to boost volunteer recruitment.
- Data and Case Management: Use a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system to support high-quality volunteer and case management, ensuring accurate data collection to support service outcomes.
- Training and Development: Develop and deliver tailored training programmes for volunteers based on the specific needs of Group Leaders and Organisers. Set up regional forums for sharing best practices and peer networking. Encourage use of Members Portal to share good practice.
- Documentation and Compliance: Ensure compliance with Best Practice Guidance document. Ensure adherence to safeguarding policies to maintain safe governance of peer support groups.
Skills and Qualities Required:
- Strong Facilitation and Communication Skills: Ability to engage effectively with diverse groups. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
- Project Management: Proven skills in managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders. Ability to meet deadlines and manage a varied workload.
- Volunteer Management: Experience in recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers in community settings. Knowledge of best practices in volunteer management.
- Influencing: Experience of influencing a wide range of partners and stakeholders, and in particular clinicians and voluntary and community providers within the health and wellbeing community.
- Community Development: Experience of developing and delivering community services with a range of stakeholders, including health and social care workers, commissioners, local authority and community and voluntary partners.

About you

Harington is an Ofsted regulated specialist college based in north London. In June 2024 we were judged as Good by Ofsted. We work with young people with learning differences aged 16-25. Our students undertake individualised learning programmes that lead to vocational qualifications and other aims, including gardening, retail, English, maths, employability and independent living. We also deliver a supported internship programme.
Our charity's learning centres in Highgate and Hornsey alongside our charity's gardening business and two charity shops, provide a unique opportunity for students to practically apply their learning on work experience placements. Our larger Highgate training centre is located in beautiful grounds, with a 1.8 acre horticulture site where we grow vegetables and flowers to sell at local markets.

Employment Details
Contract type
This contracted post is fixed term until March 2025 with the possibility of extension and is 35 hours per week. We welcome application for flexible working including reduced hours and other flexible working arrangements.
Location
The post holder will be mostly based across East London.
Salary
Between £28,840 and £31,930 Plus 5% employer pension contribution.
We have recently introduced a salary bands system. This salary range refers to the lowest and top steps of the grade. Salary will progress every year until the top salary is reached.
Holiday entitlement
25 days (pro-rata for contracted hours) of paid holiday per year plus bank holidays. This increases after two years of service to 27 days, and then a further one day per every year of service up to a maximum of 30 days after five years of service. We are looking to recruit a full-time officer to join our team delivering our flagship Pathways to Progress service. Following incoming referrals, the officer will contact service users to conduct a friendly telephone or video call to complete an assessment of their needs and challenges. The post holder will become an active member of the Charitable Services team, promoting the delivery of life enhancing support options to people with dual sensory loss and/or their carers. Service users will exhibit varying degrees of sensory loss, from the mild to the more profound. We are committed to respecting and celebrating the unique personalities and aspirations of each individual service user as we work with them to identify the most empowering bespoke action plan for them.
The officer will also have responsibility for overseeing the growth of an ongoing project to recruit and support a network of volunteers across the country, who can be co-ordinated to deliver localised marketing activities, such as attending public events on our behalf or dropping leaflets.
The main tasks delivered by the officer will be:
- To work with people with sensory loss to connect them to the services and support options that can best assist them;

- Empower children and young people to aspire to a positive future
- Contribute to the prevention of future potential attempted suicide by promoting healthy attitudes to relationships, life, resilience, families and their communities and friendships
Role tasks:
- Provide early identification, intervention and support to CYP to prevent the development of negative health outcomes for children who have been affected by suicide. With a focus on identifiers such as poor school performance, decreased social adjustment and higher levels of stress, anxiety and depression.
- This service will have a pathway dedicated to working with children and young people that runs parallel to the core service. This will comprise of:
- • Immediate response following the suspected incident of suicide loss with a focus on supporting children and young persons around communication and addressing immediate issues of uncertainty, anxiety, anger and blame.
- • Deliver Group interventions and peer support focused on exploring reactions to death and suicide and strengthening coping skills for bereaved children.
- • Individual emotional and practical support and signposting to appropriate specialist services.
- • Coordination with other key stakeholders that may be involved in the care of the child or young person. This may include schools, community groups, GPs and other professionals.
- The service will be sensitive and adaptable to the child or young person’s communication style and ensure any support materials developed are relevant and age appropriate. Parents and carers will also need support to find the best words to share 11 information with children, ways of opening up conversations and how to respond to difficult questions.
- The service will provide support to education settings such as schools, colleges and universities located within NW London. Offer guidance on developing and implementing postvention protocols and procedures to be followed in the aftermath of a suicide in the community.
- This might include providing resources and support to affected students, staff, and parents, as well as facilitating open and honest communication about the incident. In addition, it will offer emotional and practical support and signposting for students and staff who may be experiencing grief and trauma related to the suicide loss.
- This can be done through individual or group sessions, which provide a safe space for individuals to express their emotions and receive guidance on coping strategies.
- Work within a whole family approach to supporting young people, facilitating clear pathways into relevant services and maintaining effective information sharing between services.
- Assess, manage, and review risks to children/young people (CYP), parents, colleagues, and self.
- Assess the needs of CYP and develop outcome focussed support plans using solution focussed, strength-based methods, in partnership with the CYP and, as appropriate, parent/carer, enabling them to increase feelings of safety and recover from their experiences of suicide postvention
- Implement and review support and risk management plans to ensure desired outcomes are achieved.
- Develop and deliver planned interventions to meet needs and improve outcomes for CYP and families, including tailored one to one support and group work.

- Deliver programmes promoting safe relationships to prevent future experiences of abuse.
- Plan and implement activities to ensure the service is informed by the voices of CYP so we understand their needs and how we can improve our services.

About the role
Location: Community based in the London Borough of Hounslow.
Contract: Fixed Term Contract until August 2025
This is a varied and rewarding role, working in partnership with statutory and voluntary organisations, businesses and community groups, to build dementia inclusive communities in the London Borough of Hounslow.
You will;
- Deliver Dementia Friends sessions and raise community awareness of dementia.
- Work closely with local organisations to guide their dementia inclusive initiatives.
- Organise and attend health and community events in the borough.

About you
You will be work independently, alongside our local services team, to engage and develop community relationships for the long-term benefit of people affected by dementia. We particularly welcome applications from people who are representative of the diverse communities we serve in the borough.
You will have;
- An understanding or willingness to develop an understanding of dementia and the impact of dementia on both those diagnosed and those caring.
- Excellent communication skills.
- The ability to engage successfully with a diverse range of businesses, community groups and residents.
- The organisational skills to plan and prioritise your workload.
