The CharityJob Pay and Retention Report 2024: Where Do You Fit In?

Interested in learning about pay trends and job search preferences in the charity sector? We’ve published the Pay and Retention Report 2024 to bring you these insights.

We surveyed candidates who’d been active on the CharityJob website in the last three years. Our questions assessed salary trends, retention and reasons for looking for a new job. We analysed the responses of those who were based in the UK and working in the charity sector―1,832 in total.

 

Key insights from the CharityJob Pay and Retention Report 2024

 

Most respondents earned between £20,000 and £50,000

80% of respondents earned £20,000 to £50,000. The salary bracket of £20,000 to £30,000 had the largest proportion of respondents (34%).

Candidates were also asked about their level of seniority. 44% of respondents were at management level or above, and 39% were at the experienced non-manager level.

 

74% of respondents received a pay increase within the past year

Respondents who’d been working in the charity sector for over a year were asked whether they got a pay increase within the last year. 53% had received a pay increase due to an annual salary review. 11% had received a pay increase due to a promotion or increase in responsibilities. And another 10% got a pay increase due to both a promotion or increase in responsibilities and an annual salary review.

 

Nearly half of respondents didn’t feel their current pay was fair

We also asked candidates to choose how strongly they agreed or disagreed with some statements on satisfaction with pay. 48% of respondents didn’t feel their current pay was fair, and 69% disagreed that their pay reflected the current cost of living.

This is in line with recent ONS findings, which identified the cost of living as one of the most important issues facing the UK today.

Over half of respondents were planning to move jobs

59% of respondents were either ‘likely’ or ‘very likely’ to move jobs within the next year.

 

‘To advance my salary’ was the top reason for looking for a new job

Those who said they were ‘likely’ or ‘very likely’ to move jobs within the next year were also asked why. 78% of respondents said ‘to advance my salary’, followed by ‘to advance my career opportunities’ with 65%.
