Who are Guts UK Charity?
People are suffering. People are dying. All because of a lack of knowledge about our guts.
Guts UK is the only charity that covers all of the digestive system, from ‘top to tail’ covering the gut, the liver and the pancreas. Guts UK works actively and collaboratively with other charities. However, with our own limited resources, we choose to focus particularly on the conditions that have no other specific charity or voice - those illnesses that really are underserved such as pancreatitis, diverticular disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), childhood gut and liver disease and digestive cancers.
Our vision is a world where digestive disorders are better understood, better treated and everyone who lives with one gets the support that they need.
Overall Purpose of the Head of Research
- To lead the delivery of the charity’s strategic research aims including managing and further developing Guts UK’s grants programme, managing our small research team, working with research partners and networks to raise awareness of our work and outcomes, further develop impact, and continue to develop and embed patient and public involvement (PPI) in our research.
- To drive new initiatives and develop and deliver tactical plans for the Research team which meet our strategic objectives.
- As a member of the charity’s senior leadership team, to contribute to the leadership, planning and delivery of strategic initiatives and the wider development of the charity.
Who we’re looking for?
As a small but growing national charity, we punch above our weight including our research programme where we invest directly and in partnership with other organisations. We are looking for an experienced healthcare research manager who is looking to take their next career step including a move to senior leadership role. With the support of our CEO, SLT, and the Board Research Strategy Committee, you will take ownership of this portfolio, further develop and successfully delivery research strategy, and develop our research investment and impact.
We currently have a small Research team, so while this role requires strategic thinking and leadership, similar to charities of our size you will need to be someone who relishes multi-tasking and isn’t afraid to roll their sleeves up to things done. In the long term we are targeting significant growth in our research portfolio, and therefore our team, and so the role will develop and evolve.
So, if you know the medical research landscape, are experienced in research grants management, enjoy working with others and building professional partnerships, have a passion for patient voices and don’t mind getting stuck in – this role could be just what you’re looking for.
Location
We have offices in London and Huddersfield which are easily accessible by road orpublic transport. We support hybrid working but attendance in one of the offices [dependent on your location] is required on an average of 2 days per week. If you are interested in the role but have queries about office-base requirements, please contactus to discuss.

The Sophie Lancaster Foundation is a registered charity established in memory of a young woman who was tragically murdered for her distinctive gothic appearance. Our mission is to challenge prejudice and intolerance, especially towards people from alternative subcultures, and to celebrate diversity within our society. Based in Haslingden, Lancashire, we have a large following both nationally and internationally and are a well-known presence within the alternative community.
We’re looking for a highly creative social media and marketing specialist to craft and deliver engaging content across our digital channels and spread our inspiring message of tolerance and respect to an even wider audience.
The Role
We need someone with professional social media and marketing experience who is passionate about driving the Sophie Lancaster Foundation forward. You’ll manage our social media presence, engage with our followers, and create new opportunities for conversation and audience growth. As a champion of our brand, we’ll look to you to ensure our communications are always spot-on. Your writing should shine across various platforms, whether it's website content, leaflets, or marketing emails. With a keen eye for design, you’ll create impactful social media posts and use both photography and video to boost engagement. Identifying ways to expand our audience and increase income is vital for our self-funded sustainability. Besides working at your desk, you’ll also represent the Foundation at events and festivals, becoming a key member of our small team. This role is offered as a one-year contract with the potential to be made permanent and has an annual leave entitlement of 25 days per year.
About You
You might belong to an alternative subculture yourself, or at the very least, you’ll understand and empathise with subcultural groups and champion cultural differences.

Representing the Foundation is a key part of the role, so you will need to be self-sufficient in driving the company vehicle and transporting merchandise and presentation materials from our office HQ and into the event venue. Overnight stays are sometimes necessary. Please only apply if you’re based in the local area as remote working will not fulfil the in-person support required. Social media demands regular evening monitoring so if you are building a portfolio career and are not available in the evenings or don’t want to be disturbed, then this is not the role for you. Time in lieu is provided for work outside of your core hours and flexible working can be discussed.
Most importantly, you’ll be a fantastic team player who instinctively steps up to get the job done and will always go that extra mile. Your energetic, positive personality will help you build connections with communities and supporters, representing the Sophie Lancaster Foundation and our values with enthusiasm and warmth.

Location: Birmingham, London or Greater Manchester
Salary: £26,000 – £31,000 (London), £23,500 - £29,000 (Manchester or Birmingham)
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Contract: Permanent
Overall purpose
This is a key role that will work closely with the Senior Communications Manager, Head of Public Engagement and Senior Digital Marketing Manager.
You will contribute to the implementation of our communications, engagement and fundraising strategies, ensuring that your work is anchored in our organisational and team strategic goals. You will also be closely involved in team planning, whether it’s inputting into our operational plan or sharing ideas for new campaigns.
There are opportunities to get hands-on developing and delivering communications and fundraising campaigns to educate and inspire individuals, businesses, and other audiences. The aim of these campaigns is to help remove barriers to employment for refugees and bring about systemic change via our partnerships. Please note, we do not currently run political campaigns.
You will be responsible for creating and delivering day-to-day communications across our owned channels (social media, email newsletters, and some website content). You will also help colleagues create content for earned and paid communications that they’re leading on (press and media, digital marketing, engagement with influencers)
A team player, you will build strong relationships across Breaking Barriers so that you can source and develop content that:
- increases our visibility and influence
- showcases our impact
- inspires members of the public to help refugees build new lives in the UK
- engages and stewards our key audiences, including corporate partners, employees who advocate for refugees, individual donors, volunteers, and people of a refugee background.
You will support the Senior Communications Manager to maintain our strong brand, ensuring that all our content complies with our brand guidelines and is of a high standard.
With a good eye for detail, you will play a key role in our data management, including overseeing data on the storytelling section of our CRM, monitoring communications enquiries, and setting up and running reports. You will become a Salesforce Superuser (full training and support will be provided for this).
It is an exciting time to join our team. Breaking Barriers is an innovative organisation, so you will need to be comfortable with change and building new knowledge. The Public Engagement team is fast-paced. We support each other, approach problems with a good sense of humour, and are willing to experiment and learn.
