Activities Support Volunteer Volunteer Roles

Age UK Notts are seeking individuals who would like to be considered as a volunteer for our Companion Service.

Volunteers will be supporting people remotely, in their own homes and in the community within Nottingham and Nottinghamshire and ideally, we ask all applicants to provide a minimum of 1 hour volunteering a week.

The companion service volunteer can choose to be:

• A companion telephone/video caller                                                               

• A companion within the person’s home

• A companion outside the person’s home

• Or a combination of all three.

Examples of the type of support the service offers include:

• Telephone / video calls for an older person/s on a regular basis at a mutually agreed time for a friendly chat. 

• Supporting an older person/s hobbies and interests or simply chatting with them in their own home on a regular basis.

• Supporting with digital access & building confidence skills & motivation to access the opportunities of the internet.

• Supporting the person outside of their home e.g., by accompanying them on a walk, to the shops, to a café, garden centre, theatre or cinema or other social activities / community groups. 

• Where appropriate, supporting the older person to access other services through information and signposting or referring to the Companion Service Coordinator for support.

We are looking for the following skills/interests:

• Individuals with a genuine interest in the wellbeing of older people who are committed to volunteering on a regular basis.

• Commitment to complete our Volunteer Report Form accurately and regularly. 

• Ability to travel for visits in the local community either by car or public transport for those volunteers who choose to participate in this type of activity.

• Digital literacy for those volunteers who choose to participate in this type of activity.

Please do note, however, that at the moment we are not looking for Volunteer Telephone Companions.

Purpose of your role:

As a Visitor Centre Volunteer, you will provide a warm welcome to visitors to the Centre. If you have a particular passion for birds, butterflies, fungi or wildflowers then this is an opportunity to share your passion with others. You will be the friendly face representing the Trust, both in our visitor centre and on the reserve, helping visitors to make the most of their visit, and interpreting information about the reserve and its wildlife. You will be able to provide visitors with information about our events, activities and encourage people to support the Trust’s work – by volunteering, becoming members, or leaving donations. You will assist the Centre team in maintaining a clean and well-presented Visitor Centre which is profitable and efficient. You will assist the Centre team in hosting meetings and events. You will be helping to support the delivery of the Trust’s strategic plan and support the Centre team in striving towards its goals.

Tasks you will be involved with:

• Assisting with maintaining standards of housekeeping:
• • Keeping the Centre clean and well presented
• • Ensuring that the Trust facilities are ready to receive visitors each day
• • Ensuring that leaflets and posters are up to date and well presented
• Meeting & greeting visitors to the reserve:
• • Bringing the nature reserve to life for our visitors and answering their questions
• • Helping visitors discover more about the reserve and the species present
• • Engaging with visitors, and chatting about the benefits of supporting Wildlife Trusts
• • Having up to date information to hand regarding events bookings, membership offers and latest wildlife sightings
• • Promoting membership and recruiting members to Warwickshire Wildlife Trust

• Promoting volunteer opportunities
Supporting the retail offer at the Centre:
• Keeping up to date with knowledge about the products being sold
• Keeping the shop well stocked and merchandised
• Assisting with deliveries and stock input on till system
• Serving and assisting customers
• Assisting with cash handling and cashing up procedures where appropriate
Fundraising:
• Encouraging visitor donations
• Promoting any fundraising initiatives taking place at the Centre
Events:
• Assisting with setting up and clearing away after events
• Helping with any tasks that need doing during an event

Do you have bags of enthusiasm and are good at organising events? If yes, volunteer for the RSPCA as a Fundraiser and have fun and meet new people whilst raising vital funds for animals in need in your area!

As a Fundraising Volunteer, you will play a vital part, in organising and assisting with our fundraising activities. All the proceeds from these activities go directly towards the essential animal welfare work that we do at branch level. We rescue and rehome around 200 animals each year and provide community help and support with animal welfare in all DA postcodes plus BR8 postcodes.

Volunteer Fundraising Volunteer responsibilities:

• Organise, advertise, and promote fundraising activities to raise vital funds to improve animal welfare.

• Plan and participate in organised events for fundraising over an agreed time period.

• Communicate all planned activities with staff and other volunteers.

• Work alongside other volunteers, staff and members of the public, ensuring excellent customer service at all times.

• Ensure best practice in fundraising and that it is legally compliant.

What we are looking for in a Fundraising Volunteer:

About the role

We are looking for Volunteer Café Assistants to support our John Hall Wellness Gardens in Leek. You will be based at our new Café and, ideally, you will be able to commit 4 hours per week to volunteering.

You will receive training and regular supervision to ensure you feel confident in your role. 

About the service

John Hall Gardens is a Community Education Garden & Café green space for the community of Leek, local schools, colleges, and social enterprises. With the aim of enabling the local community to work/learn and socialise with people with mental and physical health support needs. This includes adults of all ages and children and young people.

Assisting the Café Supervisor and your fellow volunteers, you will play an integral part of John Hall Wellness Garden’s future, by helping to deliver a café experience for the general public, Friends of the Garden, and guests.  If you think you can make a difference and commit some time on a regular on-going basis, we would love to hear from you!

This is a great opportunity to develop your current existing skills, learn new skills and network with other volunteers. We welcome anyone wishing to gain experience or have an interest in going into the hospitality sector.

What you will be doing as a Volunteer Café​ Assistant

You will have the opportunity to assist with food preparation, presentation, cleaning and serving/selling high quality food and beverages.

Under the guidance of the Café Supervisor, you, together with other volunteers will ensure that the Café is compliant with all relevant health and safety legislation and pursuing an outstanding performance and food hygiene rating.

In addition, there will be further opportunities to support activity groups in the café, special events and input into event and menu planning.

The main tasks volunteer café assistants will support with are:

• Support Café staff, other volunteers and trainees in the smooth day to day running of the Café.
• Carry out basic catering tasks including food preparation, cleaning and serving food to customers.
• Operate the coffee machine (full training will be provided).
• Handle cash or card transactions and operate the till.
• Work with the Café Supervisor to ensure relevant paperwork is completed and checks are carried out ensuring compliance against relevant food safety and health and safety policies and procedures.
• Ensure kitchen area and Café are clean and tidy (including equipment, walls, floors, tables, work surfaces), and waste is discarded safely.
• Provide good customer service, dealing with visitors and customers in a friendly and polite manner.

We are seeking a dedicated Legal Advisor/Company Secretary to support COEMPOWERED in solidifying our legal foundation as we work to empower disadvantaged communities. Your primary responsibility will be to draft our Articles of Association, oversee the legal process of incorporating our organization as a company limited by guarantee, and guide us in securing recognition as a nonprofit or charitable company.

Key deliverables include successfully incorporating COEMPOWERED as a legally recognised nonprofit, ensuring compliance with all relevant legal standards, and preparing us to open a nonprofit bank account and apply for grants.

You will work closely with our core team, including the founder and other management commitee members, and there is room for flexibility in this role based on your expertise. We welcome your insights on how best to structure our organization for long-term success and compliance.

To take an active role in the charity activities.  Responsible for governance, safeguarding and strategic direction of the charity with other board members.  To work in partnership and to support contractors and volunteers helping them to achieve the aims of the organisation.

• Ensure the charity is run in accordance with the governing document, charity law, company law and that the decisions of the board and any other appropriate legislation or regulations are upheld.
• Ensure the charity pursues its objects as defined in its governing document.
• Work within SDAC’s Safeguarding Children and Adults policies at all times.
• Assisting with the development of strategic plans and ensuring the charity operates efficiently.
• Assisting in setting organisational aims and objectives and setting priorities.

The Communications Volunteer will write and coordinate our external communications. This includes CAW’s regular newsletter, stories and general information on our website, and campaign and research pieces. You will work alongside both our Research and Campaigns volunteers and key staff members.

• Work closely with our advice, partnership and community outreach team members to identify stories, case studies, advice and volunteering opportunities to promote

• Have the opportunity to write a regular newsletter for community partners and stakeholders to promote the work of Citizens Advice Westminster

• Produce short copy to promote our services for a variety of sources including our website and social media

• Explore and pilot new ways to promote our services to Westminster residents who currently don’t use our services, including through digital media

• Work with the Social Policy, Fundraising and Digital Media team to create high quality written content for campaigns and promotional materials

• Contribute to fundraising efforts by producing copy for general appeals, individual and group emails and our website

• Proofread and edit copy produced by others when requested

Skills, experience and time commitment

• Enthusiasm and commitment to work alongside a motivated team providing advice and information for residents across Westminster

• Excellent writing, communication and “people” skills

• Experience in writing informative, persuasive or neutral content depending on the purpose of and audience for the communication

• Self-motivation and the ability to work independently

• IT skills necessary to support research across numerous existing Citizens Advice databases and platforms 

• Knowledge and experience of marketing and communications which is transferrable to Citizens Advice

• Experience with digital media, layout/design, creating presentations and/or fundraising would be advantageous but are not essential for this role.

Ability to commit 1 or 2 days a week to the role on a regular basis; location is flexible but it is helpful to be able to come to CAW at least a couple of times each month and to participate in Advice Forums and other regular activities as these provide useful insights into our work and our clients’ experiences

Shannon Trust Volunteer Network - Community Reading and Numeracy Coach

Volunteers are essential to Shannon Trust and bring their energy, ideas and skills to train mentors in prisons, support learners in the community and enhance our business support team. 

We are looking for a volunteer to provide one-to-one reading and numeracy support to learners in the community.  

Shannon Trust’s vision is of a future where everyone can experience the positive impact of learning.   As a community reading and numeracy coach your role will be at the heart of our organisation as you support our learners in the community. This will include providing one-to-one support to learners to help them to improve their reading and numeracy through the delivery of Turning Pages and Count Me In sessions, as well as supporting the development of our programme within partner services.  You may be volunteering one-to-one with learners, or as part of a small team with other volunteers/ staff.

Our Staffordshire and Stoke Independent Visitor Service is looking for volunteers in or near to Newcastle-Under-Lyme.

• Are you passionate about wanting to help young people?
• Do you have 2 to 4 hours to spare, once a month?
• Are you ready to make a long-term, regular, commitment?

If the answer is yes and you would like to support a child or young person currently in the care of their local authority, then we would love to hear from you.

You will decide with your young person what to do, but activities could include going to the cinema, bowling, playing football, going to a restaurant, riding a bike, or walking in a park.  We will match you with a child you share common interests with.

You do not need experience of working with children and young people, just an interest in their development and welfare. Full training and support are provided.

Here’s a few of the young people we have waiting for a volunteer:

• Amy (12) lives with an older carer, she would like an active Independent Visitor who can do sports with her.
• Brad (13) lives in residential care with other young people, he doesn’t have anyone in his family visit. He would like an Independent Visitor to take him out and have fun, like the other young people.
• Cassie (16) lives with carers in a new town, she doesn’t have any friends in the area yet. She would like an Independent Visitor to help with her confidence and going out in the local area, she loves hot chocolate and cake.
• Danny (11) lives with foster carers and attends a special school. He would like an Independent Visitor to help him be more independent, he likes parks, aeroplanes, and animals.
• Emma (9) lives with her carer in a very busy household, she would like an Independent Visitor to spend some time with her on her own trying different activities together.

The Application

• Volunteering mainly happens at weekends and after school hours as the young people are usually in school during the daytime
• The role requires commitment of at least 24 months with one visit per month; this ensures stability for the Child or Young Person

About this key role

Guided by Women’s Wellbeing Coaches who will support and help you throughout, as a volunteer Peer Advisor you will support the women using a variety of methods to help reduce the risk of reoffending and encourage positive lifestyle choices.  You will provide mentoring for clients in a positive manner, in a way that helps them reach their specific goals, while also advocating on behalf of the clients and providing practical advice, which can include contacting other services or professionals on your client’s behalf and/or accompanying them at meetings.

We will count on you to maintain accurate records of your activity involving support provided to clients and to develop and maintain positive and professional working relationships with all members of staff at St Giles Trust and other professionals in the community.  Undertaking any relevant training requested to support your success and development is also key to this role.

• Lived experience of the criminal justice system (desirable)

Overview of the role

We are an exciting team that aim to design and develop fantastic programme for all members of our organisation. We have several ongoing pieces of work and upcoming projects that enable volunteers to get stuck right in and have real impact. You will have a part in designing programme, see it develop and then watch it reach local Scouting.

We will provide support when inducting you into the role, engage you in an exciting project and then help you on your next steps as a volunteer at the end of the project. This is a great opportunity for those who have never volunteered at Headquarters to give it a go. We would love to see plenty of new faces!

What would I be doing?

This role will be working as part of the Programme Design Team to facilitate work on one of our short-term projects. You will be joining one of our Project Cohorts. After applying, we will review applicants’ skills and experience, before selecting a group to work on a particular project with set goals. 

Our upcoming projects will be aiming to develop our top-quality programme. This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in innovative and impactful programme design. Each project is anticipated to last for 3 months. Once your project is complete, we will support you in your next steps as a volunteer. This could include inviting you to apply to join the Programme Design Team on a long-term basis. 

We are a small, friendly, experienced board seeking additional trustees who bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, who broaden the diversity of thinking on our board. Our trustees play a vital role in ensuring that Power to Connect achieves its core purpose. They oversee the strategic direction of the charity, ensuring effective management and alignment with our vision.

We are particularly interested in candidates with the following experience, though we welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds to support our work:

- Charity fundraising experience

- Outreach and communications experience

- Business Development Experience

- Charity management or governance experience, either through a previous trustee role or as a senior leader in a relevant charity

DUTIES

- Help set Power to Connects purpose, vision, goals and activities.

- Provide creative and innovative ideas and input into forward planning.

- Approve operational strategies and policies and monitor and evaluate their implementation.

- Provide oversight and scrutiny of financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate progress.

- Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.

- Identify, monitor, and control key risks.

- Stay informed about changes in the operating environment.

- Contribute to regular reviews of the charity’s governance.

- Attend monthly board calls, prepared to contribute to discussions.

- Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect the charity’s interests, excluding personal or third-party interests.
