About us

Who we are

Henshaws is a charity supporting people with sight loss and a range of other disabilities across the North of England.

Our Sight Loss Support services work across Greater Manchester and Merseyside, offering practical advice, guidance, wellbeing support and opportunities to help people build confidence and independence. In Harrogate, Henshaws Specialist College supports young people with special educational needs and disabilities to learn, grow and prepare for adulthood. Our Arts and Crafts Centre in Knaresborough provides creative, community-based opportunities for disabled adults through art, craft, horticulture, catering, events and enterprise.

Across all our services, our aim is to support people to live, learn and thrive in the way that matters to them. Whether we are working with adults, young people, families or local communities, our teams provide support that is personal, practical and empowering.

Our culture and values

At Henshaws, our culture is shaped by three core values: ambition, respect and empowerment.

Ambition means we are always looking for ways to do more and do better. We encourage ideas, learning and improvement so our services can continue to meet the needs of the people we support.

Respect is at the heart of how we work with each other, with the people who use our services, and with our wider communities. We value every individual, listen to different voices and aim to create an inclusive, supportive working environment.

Empowerment means helping people to thrive. That includes the people we support, as well as our colleagues. We encourage independence, confidence, ownership and personal development, so everyone can play their part in making a difference.

We are a collaborative charity, where teams work across services and locations with a shared commitment to positive outcomes. We look for people who are proactive, compassionate and willing to contribute to a culture where people feel valued, supported and able to grow.

Equality, diversity and inclusion policy

Inclusion is at the heart of how we work at Henshaws, both in the support we provide and in the way we work with our colleagues.

We are committed to creating a fair, respectful and inclusive workplace where everyone is treated with dignity, difference is valued, and people have equal access to opportunities. We oppose discrimination, harassment and victimisation in any form, and we expect everyone at Henshaws to play their part in creating a positive working environment.

Our approach to recruitment, development and progression is based on ability, values and potential. We make reasonable adjustments wherever possible and are committed to removing barriers so that staff, volunteers and applicants can feel supported, included and able to contribute fully.
